Postgame Quotes vs. Cumberland

Lamont Paris, Head Coach
On Thomas Smallwood's 18 point, 18 rebound performance.
"It was an inspired performance. He was really active and just involved in a lot of the rebounds in which he corralled. There was a couple more that he didn't get. I thought he looked really fresh and very active on both sides of the court, especially grabbing rebounds. That'll build his confidence in his ability to do that. Guys were doing a good job of finding him and he found himself in good positions. What a great performance for him. Obviously, that helps your team if you have a guy doing that."

On the inside game being an important part of the offense moving forward.
"I hope it is. One of our goals revolve around the number of free throws we make relative to the other team's attempts. They don't typically foul three-point shooters. To obtain that goal, you have to get the ball around the basket by way of passing to the post, by way of penetration, by way of whatever getting the ball in there. I'm a guy that values the inside game. I think the quality of your shots around the perimeter are improved if the ball goes inside and then outside. What you have to be willing to do is move the ball, move your body, make hard cuts and exploit it until you get that, and you'll have a high quality shot."

On overall thoughts of this year's team through three games.
"I'm extremely happy to coach these guys, I told them that on multiple occasions. I like them, I like what they're about. They don't always like what I say to them, but that's part of the growing process of being coached and all that. I like who they are as people, like who they are as citizens, I like who they are as members of this community, and I'm proud of what they do. I enjoy coaching them. We have a lot of dynamic pieces and can go a lot of different ways. We have Thomas [Smallwood] capable of stretching the floor and making threes, we have little guys that can scoot and play fast. We can play bigger lineups, we can play with smaller lineups. That's not to say we're anywhere near a finished product. Guys have shown signs they can do multiple things, on the offensive side especially. Can those versatile guys offensively, be as versatile defensively, then if they can, that can be a problem. We have to grow into being able to do that defensively."

Thomas Smallwood, Sr.-C
On grabbing 18 rebounds.
"I mean 14 of them were on the defensive end so I think it was more the fact they weren't crashing that hard. I changed my mentality coming into the game to go and get them more aggressively. It worked out. In their defense, I tried to post up hard and it didn't really work in the first half, but it came through in the second half."

On where this performance ranks personally.
"It's the best, by far. I haven't played a lot in college so I think as far as getting a double-double, that's something I want to do moving forward. That's by far the best point-rebound performance of my career … so far."

Jonathan Scott, Jr.-G/F
On growing as a team.
"Obviously, we're really young right now and it's a process to get to the point of playing together and having that chemistry. Just our experience on the court, everyone getting these minutes will help in building our chemistry."

On what works offensively.
"When we buy into coach's system it really works and gets us open shots, either under the basket or open threes."
