Â
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team wraps up the 2018 season at South Carolina on Saturday, Nov. 17. Kickoff is set for 7:39 p.m. (E.S.T.) at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, S.C.
Â
Chattanooga is coming off back-to-back tough losses where it held the opposition to 16 points or less, but could not get the win. Last week, UTC kicked a field goal with just over two minutes remaining to take a 9-7 lead over Mercer. However, the Bears returned the kickoff to the one-yard line and eventually scored the winning touchdown in a 13-9 victory. The week before, UTC held Furman to just 279 yards of total offense and 16 points, but could not get the go-ahead score in a 16-10 loss.
Â
The Gamecocks bring a 5-4 overall record that includes a 4-4 mark in SEC play. They have won two of their last three, but fell at No. 19/21 Florida last week 35-31.
Â
Chattanooga is still receiving votes in both the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll and the STATS FCS Top 25. The Mocs are 10 spots outside of the Coaches Top 25 with three votes and 13 places away from being ranked in the STATS poll with 25 votes.
Â
UTC's defense has been stout of late, allowing just 245.5 yards and 15.5 points over the last four games. Despite the effort, only two of those have resulted in wins, as the Mocs look to avoid a three-game slide for just the third time since the 2011 season.
Â
Chattanooga currently leads the SoCon and is No. 9 in the FCS in scoring defense (18.2 ppg). The Mocs are also in the top 10 in the nation in turnover margin (+8).
Â
Offensively, UTC is led by sophomore receiver
Bryce Nunnelly, who is No. 8 in the nation with 109.6 receiving yards and No. 7 in the FCS with 7.4 receptions per game.Â

MACK NAMED TO BUCK BUCHANAN AWARD WATCH LIST
The recent tear UTC'S
Isaiah Mack has been on gained some national attention last week when the senior defensive lineman was added to the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List. The Buchanan Award, presented to the national defensive player of the year in college football's Division I subdivision, has sent past winners such as Dexter Coakley, Rashean Mathis, Jared Allen, Arthur Moats and Kyle Emanuel on to NFL careers.
Â
The Tunnel Hill, Ga., native has 7.5 sacks, 8.5 TFLs and two forced fumbles in his last four games. He was named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week by SouthernPigskin.com after leading the Mocs with nine tackles in a 34-27 win over VMI on Oct. 27. He posted three of the UTC's seven sacks on the day and finished with a career-best 4.0 tackles-for-loss. The three sacks were also a career mark and just a ½ shy of the school record.
Â
That was the most sacks in a game by a Moc since current New England Patriot
Keionta Davis had three against the Keydets on Oct. 22, 2016. It was also the most TFLs in a game since
Vantrel McMillan had 4.0 against Presbyterian on Sept. 10, 2016. Mack had two sacks at Western Carolina on Oct. 13 and another last week at Furman.
Â
His 8.5 sacks on the year are currently second in the Southern Conference and No. 14 in the FCS. He has 21.0 career sacks, which is fourth-place all-time at UTC behind Davis Tull (37.0 - 2011-14),
Keionta Davis (31.0 - 2013-16) and Joshua Williams (23.5 - 2009-12). His 41.0 career TFLs are third all-time at UTC, trailing Tull (60.0) and Davis (43.0).
Â
Mack is the fifth Moc to be up for the Buchanan Award. Davis has the highest ever finish in the voting at ninth in 2016. He was also 17th in 2015. Tull was 12th in 2014 and 13th in 2015. Wes Dothard (19th in 2012 and 25th in 2011) and Josh Beard (22nd in 2009) also made the list. Â
Â
SEVEN-WIN SEASONS
The Mocs have put up some impressive numbers over the last decade. Since 2009, UTC has finished above .500 seven times, which is an amazing accomplishment considering there were only 30 winning seasons in the entire 110-year history of the program. The Mocs have secured another winning season in 2018 and have a shot for their 24th seven-win campaign on Saturday.  Â
7-win seasons - 23 overall - 4 since 2009.
8-win seasons - 9 overall - 4 since 2009.
9-win seasons - 7 overall - 3 since 2009.
Â
MOCS DEFENSE STRONG IN LAST FIVE OUTINGS
The Mocs have had some strong defensive efforts the last five games. Wofford came into the Oct. 6 game against UTC ranked second in the league and No. 16 in the FCS in scoring at 36.5 points per game. UTC held the Terriers to just 21 points, a season-low against an FCS opponent at the time.
Â
Western Carolina entered into the Oct. 13 game leading the SoCon and No. 19 in the FCS in scoring at 35.8 points per game. UTC kept the Catamounts out of the end zone for the first time in four years in a 26-6 win. Chattanooga held WCU to a season-low 238 yards of total offense (82 rush/121 pass).
Â
VMI brought a vaunted passing attack to the Homecoming game on Oct. 27. The Keydets were No. 3 in the nation, averaging 343 passing yards per game before face the Mocs. UTC held them to just 313 yards in the air and -16 on the ground in the 34-27 win.
Â
Chattanooga held Furman to 279 yards of total offense (183 rush/96 pass). It marked the second time this season the Mocs held an opponent under 300 yards (ETSU). Last week, the Mocs limited Mercer to just 149 yards of total offense, 71 rushing and 78 passing. Both of the Bear's fourth quarter scores were set up after long kickoff returns.  Â
Â

Â
MOCS ARE HISTORICALLY STRONG IN THE REDZONE
UTC currently leads the SoCon and is No. 6 in the FCS in red zone defense (65.6% - 21/32). The Mocs have made 11 stops when backed inside their own 20-yard line. Chattanooga only had six all of last year and just five in 2016. The last time they had 10 or more in a season was in 2005 when they had 12 (38-50 – 76%).
Â
COOPER LEADS THE MOCS DEFENSE
Junior LB
Marshall Cooper was the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week after posting eight tackles, a forced fumble and an interception in a 27-20 win over No. 17 Samford on Sept. 22. His interception came as Samford was trailing by two scores but driving deep in Chattanooga territory in the fourth quarter. The 41-yard return flipped the field for the Mocs. Cooper also added a pass breakup in the game. Cooper is currently third in the SoCon and No. 31 in the FCS with 9.0 tackles per game.
Â
Cooper has twice stopped a team on the goal line. He forced a fumble on the one-yard line against Wofford. He also recovered a fumble in the same situation at Western Carolina.  Â
Â
TURNOVER TURNAROUND
Through 10 games, the Mocs are +8 in turnover margin. That leads the SoCon and is No. 10 in the FCS. That is a dramatic difference than a year ago when UTC was -12 in that category, 8th in the SoCon and 113th in the FCS. UTC leads the SoCon (23rd in the FCS) with nine fumbles recovered. The Mocs are second in the league (30th in the FCS) with 11 interceptions. UTC is one of 20 teams in the FCS to throw five picks or less on the year. The Mocs have also lost only seven fumbles, three at ETSU. Chattanooga is tied for the SoCon lead and and No. 17 in the FCS in total takeaways with 20.
Â
MACK & MAHAFFEY CONTROLLING THE MIDDLE
Defensive linemen don't typically put up big numbers when it comes to making tackles. However, that is not the case with UTC's senior duo of
Derek Mahaffey and
Isaiah Mack. Mack and Mahaffey are currently second and third on the team with 76 and 58 tackles, respectively. They each have posted 10+ tackles twice in a game, led by Mack's 16 at The Citadel. Mahaffey set his career mark with 11 of his own against the Bulldogs. Mack has posted or tied for the team lead in tackles in three games this season, while Mahaffey has done it twice.Â
Â
TIANO ALSO PUTTING UP IMPRESSIVE NUMBERs
Junior QB
Nick Tiano is 216-342 passing for 2,456 yards and 15 touchdowns against only five interceptions. He needs 167 yards to pass
Alejandro Bennifield (2,622 in 2016) for sixth place on the Mocs single-season list.
Â
Tiano has also run 75 times for 222 yards and one score, giving him 2,678 yards of total offense. Another 300-yard game could move him up to sixth on the single-season list at UTC, passing Cedric Stevens (2,837 in 2004) and B.J. Coleman (2,984 in 2010). The full list for passing yards and total offense are on page 9 of the .pdf of the game notes.Â
Â
Tiano is 26th in the FCS and fourth in the SoCon in total offense (267.8) through 10 games. He is third in the league and No. 19 in the FCS in passing yards (245.6). Other SoCon/FCS rankings include 4th/39th with 15 passing TDs, 3rd/14th in completions per game (21.6) and 4th/17th in completion percentage (63.2%).Â
Â
Tiano's 216 completions is sixth-most in a season at UTC. He could pass Jacob Huesman (226 in 2014), B.J. Coleman (227 in 2009) and Cedric Stevens (232 in 2004) for third. His five interceptions are the fewest among the Mocs who completed over 200 passes in a season, while he has the fourth best percentage for those in the 200 completion club.
Â
Tiano was the first Moc to throw back-to-back 300-yard games since B.J. Coleman against Furman (432) and Elon (386) in 2010. He also had the most passing yards in the first two games of the season since Chris Sanders threw for 358 at Samford and 367 at Louisville in 1999. His 347 yards against The Citadel were the most in a game since Jacob Huesman had 359 against Mercer in a 38-31 win on Oct. 25, 2014. His 318 passing against TTU were the most in a season opener since B.J. Coleman had 340 vs. No. 3 Appalachian State on Sept. 4, 2010.Â
Â
TYRELL PRICE GIVES THE MOCS A VERSATILE RUNNING ATTACK
Junior RB
Tyrell Price had season highs with 135 rushing yards on 29 carries at Western Carolina. It was the most carries in a game since Jacob Huesman had 31 against No. 21 Indiana State in the FCS Playoffs on Dec. 6, 2014.
Â
Price is currently 11th in the SoCon with 65.6 rushing yards per game. He is fourth in the SoCon and 31st in the FCS with nine rushing TDs. He is third in total TDs (10 - 46th in FCS). He also leads the SoCon with 181 rushing attempts.Â

Henrique Ribeiro's 47-yard field goal.Â

Â
PARKER'S BIG GAME VS. LSU
Wide receiver
Joseph Parker had a big game at LSU last year. He posted six catches for 104 yards, becoming just the eighth Moc to total 100 receiving yards against an FBS opponent and just the fourth time against a Power 5 team. His 67-yard reception was the longest of the year for UTC.
Â
CHATTANOOGA WINS VS. FBS TEAMS
UTC picked up its third win in program history over an FBS opponent on Sept. 7, 2013, with a 42-14 victory at Georgia State. Prior to that, the last time the Mocs defeated an FBS team was a 9-7 win over Southwestern Louisiana (Louisiana-Lafayette) on Sept. 1, 1984, in Chattanooga. The other win since the divisional split in 1978 was also over the Ragin' Cajuns, 38-14 on Sept. 17, 1983, in Lafayette, La.

MOCS AGAINST HEISMAN TROPHY WINNERS
UTC faced the eventual Heisman Trophy winner for three straight seasons from 2008-2010, including Oklahoma's Sam Bradford (2008), Alabama's Mark Ingram (2009) and Auburn's Cam Newton (2010). The Mocs were one of only two teams to sack Newton three times in a game in 2010.
Â
BIG CROWDS
Two of the biggest crowds the Mocs have played in front of in school history have come against an SEC opponent. UTC faced No. 1 Alabama in 2016 in front of 101,821, the most ever to see the Mocs play. There were also 100,170 in attendance at the 2013 game at Alabama and 97,289 last year at LSU.
