The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team took part in the first day of the inaugural Chattanooga Collegiate Clay Court Championships at Manker Patten today.
The Mocs won three doubles matches to open the tournament, along with four wins in singles action.
Freshman
Tomas Rodriguez had a great start to his collegiate career, teaming with sophomore
Jacob Marshall for an opening round win in doubles over the Troy tandem of Pelaya Atuna and Andy Romero (6-2).
Rodriguez followed that with a first round win in singles over ETSU's Mark Papadopoulos (6-1, 6-0). He went on to advance to the quarterfinals of the 32-man draw with a (6-2, 6-2) win over Turner Voges of Memphis.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals in singles play was junior
Simon Bustamante. He opened with a bye and then defeated ETSU's Chris Mikrovas in three sets [4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (7)].
Bustamante also got a doubles win, teaming with freshman
Kerim Hyatt to defeat UAB's Pasini and Vargos (6-2).
