Bustamante, Gerdes to Represent Mocs at All-American Tournament

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga juniors Simon Bustamante and Niklas Gerdes are set to compete at the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., this weekend.
Hosted by the University of Tulsa for the last 14 years, competitors are vying for the All-American national title. In addition, players are competing to secure a berth into the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which takes place November 7-11, in Surprise, Ariz. Singles quarterfinalists, consolation singles champion and finalist, along with doubles semifinalists and consolation doubles champion and finalist advance to the end of fall national championship.
"We are excited about the opportunity for Niklas and Simon to play in the All-American Championships," stated UTC head coach Chuck Merzbacher. "They have worked hard to get in this tourney.
"This is considered a collegiate grand slam event, run by the ITA. All the best collegiate players in the nation will be there, so you want to be there!"
This is the first event of the fall for Gerdes. He is coming off a sophomore campaign where he posted a 17-16 mark in singles. He also earned the Don Bunch/Buddy Hartsell Sportsmanship Award from the Southern Conference.
Bustamante went 1-2 in singles at the Chattanooga Collegiate Clay Court Championships on Sept. 14-16. He was 11-17 in singles last season, including an 8-9 mark at No. 2.
Preliminary qualifying singles take place Sept. 29-30, with qualifying on Oct. 1-2. The main draw of singles is Oct. 4-8. Bustamante and Gerdes begin in the PQ draw and will compete until they are knocked out of the tournament.
