BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga runner Kennedy Thomson set a Samford Open meet record in the Mile Saturday afternoon and the Mocs had a strong showing in their first meet of the New Year.
Â
Thomson was just under the wire, running the mile in a time of 4:53.08, finishing ahead of the previous best time by less than one second. She also ran the 400 meter finishing in a time of 59.67.
Â
"Kennedy had an outstanding day," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "She broke the meet record in the mile and was right at her PR in the 400."
Â
Mackenzie Jones and Emily Poole proved a tough match in the women's 5000 meter run. Jones won the distance race with a time of 17:50.75, nearly 20 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor while Poole took third, improving from her time last year at 18:09.30.
Â
"Our 5K tandem got us started with a first and third," Meyer said. "Makenzie set a PR and Emily ran 15 seconds faster than the same time last year."
Â
In the 800 meter run the Mocs placed three in the top five led by Abby Bateman's second place finish with a time of 2:19.93, just one second off her PR time. Ashlynd Broling, also just shy of a personal best, was fourth in the race followed by teammate Katie Coker.
Â
Hannah Caldwell and Sophia Neglia ran a tight 3000 meter run, placing second and third respectively. Caldwell covered the distance in a time of 10:38.40 and Neglia finished at 10:40.98.
Â
Nicole Buehrle finished third in the 1000 meter with a time of 3:01.59, running a PR and ran the lead leg of the 4x400 meter relay. Rebekah Hampton pulled the second leg of the relay followed by Taylor Sawyer and Hannah Salami at anchor.
Â
Sawyer ran a PR in the 400 meter and Rebekah Hampton made improvements this season in the long jump from the first meet and dropped a full second in the 60-meter dash.
Â
Three members of the men's cross country team ran the 3000m race. John Payne placed third with a time of 8:49.89. Jonathan Boyd and Micah Sneller competed hard and placed well in their heat.
Â
"Overall the kids ran very well for just second meet of the season," Meyer said. "We are a little ahead of where we were this time last year and that bodes well for later in the season."
Â
Chattanooga will return to Birmingham for the Samford Invitational February 8-9 at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Results will be available at GoMocs.com.
