Game Notes at Wofford

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team is on the road this weekend at Wofford in a key Southern Conference matchup. The Mocs take on the Terriers on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 1:30 p.m. (E.D.T.) at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C.

Chattanooga is currently leading the SoCon race with a 3-0 record in the association.  The Mocs are 4-3 overall and riding a three-game winning streak.  Chattanooga is back to receiving votes in both the STATS FCS Top 25 and the AFCA FCS Coaches Polls.

The Terriers are tied with Furman for second in the SoCon with a 3-1 league tally.  Wofford opened the season with losses to South Carolina State (13-28) and Samford (14-21), but is now on a run of four wins in a row and 4-2 overall.  The Terriers are also receiving votes in both FCS polls.

UTC's defense has been stout in its last two outings, only allowing 257 yards to Mercer and 272 to ETSU.  That will be put to the test this weekend, as Wofford owns the nation's top rushing attack at 369.0 yards per game.  The Terriers are also No. 17 in the nation in scoring (36.8 ppg) and No. 9 in the country in total offense (469.5).

Gibbs Stadium has been a tough place for the Mocs over the years.  UTC is just 3-8 overall at Wofford, with only one win in its last nine trips.  The lone victory was a 20-17 triumph on a last-second Henrique Ribeiro field goal on Oct. 24, 2015.

MORE ON THE SOCON RACE
After Furman and Wofford, there is a logjam of four teams with two league losses.  VMI (4-4, 3-2 SoCon) sits in fourth place, while The Citadel (4-4, 2-2 SoCon), Mercer (3-4, 2-2 SoCon) and Samford (3-4, 2-2 SoCon) are all tied for fifth.  ETSU (2-5, 0-4 SoCon) and Western Carolina (1-6, 0-4 SoCon) are still looking for their first league win each.

IT'S ALL IN THE NAME
On first reference, it is acceptable to refer to us as the "University of Tennessee at Chattanooga." After that, we prefer to be called "Chattanooga" or "UTC."  Our nickname is "Mocs," not Moccasins.  Chattanooga is pronounced chat-uh-NEW-guh, commonly mistaken as CHATT-nooga.

SEASON NO. 112
As a part of the year-long celebration of 150 years of college football, the Mocs are competing in their 112th season.  The University of Chattanooga was founded in 1886 and football officially began play in 1904.  No teams were fielded in 1917 and 1918 due to World War I.  There was also a two-year hiatus from football action during World War II in 1943 and 1944.  The Mocs have an all-time record of 543-535-35 (.504) and have won 13 conference titles.

FORD NAMED STATS FCS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Freshman RB Ailym Ford is the STATS FCS National Freshman of the Week for games ending on Oct. 20.  Three previous times this season, Ford was among the honorable mentions for the weekly honor, but he claimed the top spot with a massive night in conference play. It also means he's been a contender for the award in four of the eight weeks it's been given.

Ford led the Mocs to a 16-13 Southern Conference win over ETSU on Thursday, Oct. 17.  He posted 200 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries in the victory.  He had back-to-back rushes of 23 and 11 yards in the game-winning drive for the Mocs.

The last time a Moc brought home national weekly honors was Bryce Nunnelly after putting up 268 receiving yards in the exciting overtime win at The Citadel last season. He also completed the walk-off win completing the 2-point conversion pass to Jordan Giberti.

30 CARRIES THREE STRAIGHT GAMES?
Freshman RB Ailym Ford has carried the ball 30 or more times in each of the last three games.  The only other Moc to handle that much of the rushing load in three straight games was Tyrone Coleman in 1998 and no one from UTC has done it four games in a row.  He had 31 carries for 200 yards and two scores against ETSU, 32 carries for 116 yards and a score at Mercer and 195 yards and two scores on 30 attempts against Western Carolina.  Coleman's run included 31 carries for 210 yards at The Citadel on 11/7/98, a school-record 37 carries for 142 yards against ETSU on 11/14/98 and 31 carries for 150 yards and three TDs at Furman on 11/21/98.

FORD LEADS FCS FRESHMEN IN RUSHING YARDS PER GAME
True freshman Ailym Ford is averaging 108.1 yards per game this season, tops among all freshmen at the FCS level.  He is third in the SoCon and No. 9 overall in the FCS in rushing.  He has been named in the Honorable Mention listings for National Freshman of the Week by STATS three times, and finally took the full honor last week.

FORD MOVES UP UTC FRESHMAN RUSHING RECORD LIST
Ford is fifth in freshman rushing yards at UTC with 757 this season.  He needs 148 to pass Jacob Huesman (2012) for fourth.  He is tied for the school freshman record with seven rushing TDs with Huesman and James Roberts (1989).  His 153 rushing attempts is fourth in freshman history at UTC.  He needs 20 more to pass Mike Smith (1977). He has four 100-yard rusing games, tying with Jacob Huesman (2012) for fourth among freshman at Chattanooga and two shy of the freshman record held by Mike Smith (1977).

FOUR SACKS ALLOWED IN SEVEN GAMES
Not only is UTC running the ball effectively, but the Mocs offensive line is also doing an outstanding job of protecting QB Nick Tiano.  Despite allowing two sacks in the last game against ETSU, the Mocs have only given up four all year, ranking second in the SoCon and fifth in the FCS in sacks allowed.

This continues a streak of improvement up front.  UTC's offensive line gave up 17 sacks in 2018, which was third in the SoCon and 33rd in the FCS.  That was much better from 2017 when they were last in the SoCon and 109th in the FCS, allowing over three per game.

NUNNELLY ON THE WALTER PAYTON AWARD WATCH LIST
Junior receiver Bryce Nunnelly is on the 2019 Walter Payton Award Preseason Watch List. He is also on the preseason All-SoCon first team and a consensus preseason All-American.  He is currently sixth in the SoCon with 4.3 receptions per game and eighth with 55.3 receiving yards per game.  Injuries have limited his time on the field the last two games, but he still leads the team with 30 catches for 387 yards and three TDs, including 100-yard games against Eastern Illinois and Western Carolina.  He has 5+ catches in 14 of the last 18 games and has caught a pass in 20-straight games.  Over the last two years, he has 13 catches of 40+ yards.

NUNNELLY MOVING INTO THE CAREER CHARTS AT UTC
• Eight career 100-yard receiving games is third all-time at UTC ... two shy of the school record set by Joe Burks (1977-80) ... Cos Dematteo (1999-02) is second with nine 100-yard games ... all in the last 17 games.
• 1,713 career yards with 10 TDs and 116 catches
• Needs 10 catches to break into the top 10 all-time at UTC
• Needs 78 yards to break into the top 10 all-time at UTC.
• Needs three receiving TDs to break into the top 10 all-time at UTC.

TIANO-NUNNELLY CONNECTION AMONG TOPS IN SCHOOL HISTORY
Senior QB Nick Tiano and junior WR Bryce Nunnelly have hooked up for 12 touchdowns over the last two years. It would be 13 if the trick play against South Carolina in 2018 was included where Nunnelly threw a two-yard TD pass to Tiano. Regardless of how it is scored, this is one of the top throw-and-catch tandems in school history.  Below is where they rank all-time at UTC in touchdowns between a QB and receiver.
1. 22 – Chris Sanders (QB) to Cos DeMatteo (WR) – 1999-00
2. 15 - Jacob Huesman (QB) to Faysal Shafaat (TE) - 2012-14
3. 13 - Steve Woods (QB) to Joe Burke (WR) - 1979-80
4. 12 – Nick Tiano (QB) to Bryce Nunnelly (WR) – 2018-19

TIANO CLIMBING UTC'S RECORD BOOKS
Senior QB Nick Tiano opened the season with 256 passing yards on 17-27 attempts against EIU.  He threw one touchdown and had two interceptions.  With 22 games at UTC under his belt, he is climbing the following lists in UTC's record book:
• 11-11 as a starter ... tied for ninth in all-time wins at UTC with Mickey Brokas (1970-73) ... needs three more wins to tie B.J. Coleman (2009-11) for eighth.
• 414-710 (.583) career passing.
• 4,722 career passing yards is eighth all-time at UTC ... needs 305 to pass Steve Woods (1978-81) for seventh.
• Seventh in career attempts ... needs 19 to pass Kenyon Earl (1991-94) for sixth.
• Sixth in career completions ... needs 26 to pass Mickey Brokas (1970-73) for fifth.

• 26 career TD passes is 10th all-time at UTC ... needs three to pass Tony Merendino (1975-78) and Brian Hampton for eighth.
• 10 200-yard passing games is seventh all-time at UTC ... needs three more to pass Kenyon Earl for sixth.
• 5,248 yards of total offense is seventh all-time at UTC ... needs 752 yards to pass Brian Hampton (1995-98) for sixth.
