The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team dropped a 39-0 match at No. 2 Iowa on Sunday afternoon. The match drew 10,466 fans in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, one of the largest crowds UTC has ever competed in front of for a dual meet.
Senior
Rodney Jones had the most competitive match of the night against No. 4 Jacob Warner. A takedown and penalty gave Warner a 3-1 lead after the first period. A second stalling call on Jones and an escape by Warner in the second frame left Jones trailing 5-1. Jones quickly escaped to start the third. He then scored a takedown late, before losing the decision 5-4.
Junior
Matthew Waddell was also competitive in his match against Nelson Brands. He lost that one 8-4 at 184. Sophomore
Drew Nicholson battled hard in a 9-4 loss to No. 2 Alex Marinelli at 165, while sophomore
Tanner Smith lost by the same score to No. 5 Pat Lugo at 149.
UTC is 1-3 overall while the Hawkeyes are 1-0. Up next for the Mocs is a weekend road trip to Davidson (Nov. 22) and No. 17 North Carolina (Nov. 24). The next home match is Sunday, Dec. 1, against Ohio. Tickets are on sale now on GoMocs.com for the 2:00 p.m. dual.
