ABOUT CHATTANOOGA BASKETBALL
CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs return to the Roundhouse Sunday hosting Troy. It's a non-conference double-header with the women's squad taking on the Trojans at 1:30 p.m., followed by the men's rematch at 4 p.m.
Rematch? The Troy Trojans are a rare non-conference, in-season home-and-home opponent. How rare? The last time the Mocs played a non-conference opponent twice in the same campaign was Jacksonville State in 2016-17. But the home matchup with the Gamecocks was the championship game of the Cayman Islands Classic in Chattanooga. It was not a scheduled home-and-home.
You have to go all the way back to was December 2003 for a true non-conference home-and-home. The Mocs hope to conjure up the same mojo from that series sweeping Tennessee State. It started with a 93-86 road win, coming back from 14 points down at the half, and then claiming a 74-70 home win 21 days later.
The first meeting with Troy was a
come-from-behind 74-68 triumph. The Trojans led by 14 early in the second half before the Mocs chipped away.
A.J. Caldwell's and-1 with 2:00 minutes to go gave the squad the lead for good sparking a 10-0 run before a couple of late scores settled the margin at six. The Trojans enter the contest 4-6 fresh off a 60-55 win at Jacksonville State.
Chattanooga athletics in conjunction with the Salvation Army are hosting a winter coat drive. Donate a new or gently-used coat to help those in the area in need during the cold season and get buy one, get one free tickets.

3 NOTES TO KNOW
- Defense is a key. The Mocs have held seven of 11 opponents to fewer than 70 points. They're 5-2 in those circumstances. The last time a similar run occurred to open a season was eight of 11 in 2015-16. Most times in a season? 25 in 1981-82 & 2015-16. 67.3 scoring defense is the best since 66.9 in 2014-15.
- It's been really strong effort at the 3pt line. Opponents are making just 30.841 percent beyond the arc to this point, 66 of 214. School record is 30.840 percent (202-655) in 1992-93.
- Since the addition of Stefan Kenić to the rotation, the bench offensive performance has increased. Kenić (16) and
Jonathan Scott (8) combined for 24 points off the bench. That's the fifth straight game where the reserves combined for 22 or more points averaging 28.2 ppg. They had 75 (12.5) in the first six.
