Chattanooga Basketball Postgame Quotes
ETSU at Chattanooga
McKenzie Arena – Chattanooga, Tenn.
Saturday – Feb. 2, 2019
Lamont Paris, Head Coach
Opening statement after 77-64 loss to ETSU.
"It's multiple losses in a row. That's not good. I don't really operate that way. I could try to make something up that would connect this game to the last game, but I would have a hard time doing that. We played poorly tonight. We played well in a lot of areas defensively. I thought we competed with them and did some good things. I think there was some basketball plays we didn't make and some days you play better and some days you play worse, that's natural. Once they started on their run, we jumped on the panic button and that's something we've done more times than not. We have to learn we can not do that. That has to change, we're too far in the season for that not to change."
On ETSU's defensive aggressiveness.
"They were aggressive and we didn't counter their aggression with our own aggression. There was a couple times where we were in a one-man straight jacket. You have to be able to get open against one guy and then make a secondary move. They were aggressive in there, but we allowed them to be aggressive because we didn't counter it. We weren't able to score like we wanted to."
On guards staying in 'attack mode'.
"I don't mind if guys attack. I've never said much about a guy attacking too much or being aggressive. That's what I probably say to the guys most. I want them to be aggressive and attack guys, make them pay for being overly aggressive. That's what you want a guy to say. Some of it may be continuing to learn on how to use your aggression based on what situation you're in. We had a lot of situations in crunch time where we made bad shot selections. Those are significant in these games."
Donovann Toatley, Fr.-G
On difference between first half & second half.
"I feel like we came out in the first half we played extremely hard with a lot of intensity, we looked really good. We sent a message early on. But in the second half, we kind of let off the gas. We looked tired and overwhelmed when they made a run. As a collective unit, when other teams make runs, we have to be more poised in those situations and learn how to weather the storm. Basketball is a game of runs and you can't let that knock you off course. You can't hit the panic button. Once we learn that and just come together as a team in those situations .. we'll be fine in these types of games."Â
On improvements within the team tonight.
"I saw some improvement on the defensive end. We picked up the intensity on defense a lot tonight. We looked really strong at times. We were in the gaps, helping each other, we were communicating. It looked like a practice drill of shell. We looked strong on the defensive end. On the offensive end, our shot selection, even if some were a little sporadic, we took some good shots tonight and made some of them. There was a lot of victories in this moral lesson."
Ramon Vila, R-So.-F
On what was the difference between first & second half.
"We played really well in the first half. We played strong and played like how we were supposed to do. In the second half, they just came out of the locker room with more energy than we did. I don't think their energy effected us, we just made some mistakes we usually don't make. We weren't scared or anything, we just made mistakes we usually don't make and they made us pay for it."
