ABOUT CHATTANOOGA GOLF
CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team heads back to the tee this week at Auburn's Tiger Invitational presented by Jason Dufner. The three-day, 54-hole, event begins Sunday and ends Tuesday with 18 holes per day at the Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Ala.
The Mocs look to build on their last round from the spring's first event at Martin Downs in Florida. The squad shot its lowest tally vs. par on the campaign with a 9-under 279.
The group is led by sophomore
Oliver Simonsen whose current 70.83 scoring average is the best in school history. He's joined by
Connor Nolan,
Leon Bader,
Lake Johnson and
Etienne Brault. Johnson has fond memories of the Grand National Lake Course finishing third a year ago at 3 under.
Simonsen, Nolan and Bader earned their lineup spots are performance-based from Martin Downs. Johnson and Brault captured the final two spots in qualifying. It was a hotly-contested 36 holes with Brault and Johnson emerging from Council Fire and Black Creek Golf Clubs with 5-under totals. They topped
Dominic Jones in a playoff for the final two spots. Johnson (65) and Jones (67) were spectacular on the final day to match Brault.
A tough tourney field awaits the quintet. There are three top 25 programs – No. 6 SMU, No. 10 Auburn and No. 21 Arkansas State – and six total top 100 with several others lurking to enter that level with strong finishes on the par 72, 7,289-yard tract.
