The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team opens the 2019 Southern Conference Tournament against host Mercer on Thursday, April 18. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center in Macon, Ga., and a link for live scoring is available on the men's tennis schedule page on GoMocs.com.
UTC is the No. 3 seed in the event after posting a 4-3 mark in SoCon play and a 14-10 overall record. Chattanooga carries its highest seed into the postseason since 1999.
"We are excited and proud to be the third seed for a strong and deep field at the Southern Conference Tournament," stated 2019 SoCon Coach of the Year
Chuck Merzbacher. "We realize that we are probably going to have to beat three teams that have already beaten us this year to win this thing, and we understand that will be quite the challenge.
"This group wants to extend the season as long as they can, so I know they'll battle and compete like they have all year."
Mercer is seeded No. 6 with a 10-14 mark and 3-4 league tally. The Bears got a 4-3 win over the Mocs on March 24 in Chattanooga. UTC lost the opening doubles point, but got singles wins from 2019 SoCon Freshman of the Year
Kerim Hyatt at No. 3, senior
Simon Bustamante at No. 4 and sophomore
Jacob Marshall at No. 6.
Chattanooga is looking to add to the most wins in a season since 2012. The Mocs also posted its highest number of league victories since going 6-4 in 2013. UTC is second in the league with 12 tournament titles, trailing Furman's 14 championships. ETSU has won the title each of the last four years and is third all-time with 11.
