Chattanooga Mocs senior Monica San Juan gets her first taste of NCAA Regionals this week at the NCAA Auburn Regionals.

CHATTANOOGA---Chattanooga Mocs senior Monica San Juan begins play at the NCAA Auburn Regionals on Monday. She gets her first look at Saugahatchee Country Club Sunday for a practice round before playing 54 holes with an eye toward competing for the NCAA Championship.
San Juan is one of 78 players in the field as 18 teams and six individuals converge on southeast Alabama. The top six teams and three individuals on non-advancing teams move on to the finals May 17-22 at the Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
But first is this week's regional. The field takes the tee Monday for the opening round of three completing 54 holes on Wednesday.
"It's the first year for me (to go regionals)," San Juan began. "My freshman year I got to watch my teammate Emily McLennan play (at Shoal Creek) so I have an idea what that experience is like so I'm very excited."
She's been a hot streak. Over the last four tournaments, San Juan's scoring average is 73.56. Her 1-under 215 winning total at the Southern Conference Championships was the first par or better finish in the league's eight visits to Hilton Head's Moss Creek Golf Club.
It was four better than SoCon Golfer of the Year Haylee Harford (Furman) and ETSU's Hee Loy Loy, also an individual NCAA selection at the East Lansing Regionals. It was five clear of Natalie Srinivasan of Furman, 30th-ranked amateur in the world whom she played head-to-head over the final 18 holes.
"Knowing it's my last semester, I think my mentality has been a little different...especially these last few tournaments," she continued. "I've worked on being patient and just enjoy every shot. Normally, on the course, when I hit a bad shot, I'm not very patient. But I've focused on keeping a good attitude.
"I definitely wanted to finish on a good note," San Juan concluded. "One of my goals was to get at least one collegiate win and to reach regionals, so I'm glad it is happening.
"I just wish my teammates could be there competing with me."

3 NOTES TO KNOW
- San Juan is the third Moc to earn a regionals berth in program history. She joins Emma de Groot (2008) and Emily McLennan (2016).
- If she advances to Fayetteville, it will mark the second time Chattanooga makes the NCAA Championships. The first was 2009 in the first try as a team at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. That group included de Groot, current Ladies European Tour pro Christine Wolf, Maria Salinas, Maria Juliana Loza and Moa Duf.
- San Juan's 73.94 stroke average this year is third-best all-time behind former teammate McLennan (73.34) and de Groot (73.81). Her career mark of 75.08 is also third trailing de Groot (74.58) and McLennan (74.71).
