San Juan Starts NCAA Regionals Play with 77

Chattanooga Mocs senior Monica San Juan had her round slowed by three tough holes starting with an opening round 77 at the NCAA Auburn Regionals.

OPELIKA, Ala.---Chattanooga Mocs senior Monica San Juan opened play with a 5-over 77 at the NCAA Auburn Regionals. It was her first taste of NCAA postseason play so one might think she was a little nervous to start at Saugahatchee Country Club. One would be wrong.
"Surprisingly not," she shared right after the round concluded. "I think I was more nervous the last round of conference. (Today) I didn't find myself nervous at all."
That certainly bore itself out on the opening holes. She just missed birdie starting on the par 5 10th but made up for it on the par 4 11th which played as the most difficult hole on the course at more than a half-a-shot (0.54) over par.
But bogeys on 12 and 13 along with an unusual double on 15 got the round headed in the wrong direction.
"I hit a pretty good shot on 13 and three-putted from about 33 feet," she added. "I hit it in the water with my driver on 15 which is really unusual. I kept steady making pars until two when I had another three putt.
"It's basically just those three mistakes with the three putts and the ball I hit into the water that cost me. The rest I'm pretty pleased with."
The three putt on No. 2, her 11th hole of the round, may have helped lead to bogies on three and four as she fell to 6 over thought 13 holes. She struck back at six with birdie after a solid drive and approach left her with about six feet which she made. Oddly enough both of her birdies came on the holes that played by far the hardest as the field averaged 4.41 on six.
Prior to the round, Coach Colette Murray shared that it's a 'ball-strikers" course. That's something that plays to San Juan's advantage.
"It really fits well with my game," San Juan added. "Today I didn't really strike it very well. It wasn't one of those days where I was comfortable with my long game. I still hit greens and got around pretty well. I think if tomorrow I can feel more comfortable hitting long shots, I'll be good."
San Juan returns to the tee at 9:50 a.m., Eastern time, Tuesday opening again on No. 10. Results along with photo gallery, live scoring, pairings and notes are linked above.
