The 2017-18 athletics season saw the Mocs advance to the postseason in men's and women's cross country, wrestling and women's basketball. UTC had one SoCon Athlete of the Year, three individual SoCon Champs and 66 on the Academic All-SoCon Team.

Men's Basketball (Lamont Paris, head coach) • 10-23, 3-15 SoCon/10th
• Began the season with the youngest team in NCAA Division I basketball. Average age of 19.31 was just ahead of Kentucky's 19.43. The squad returned zero starters and just five letter winners. Top wins for the team came at 2017 Ohio Valley Conference Champion Jacksonville State and the double OT thriller in McKenzie Arena over 2018 Southern Conference winner UNCG.
• The 2OT win over the Spartans included 10-point comeback at halftime and return from seven-point with 35 seconds to play in first OT. Also came back from 12 down at Jacksonville State marking just the fourth time in school history the program overcame double-digit deficits at the break (1988-89, 2000-01, 2007-08).
• Makinde London set a school record for most 20-point/15-rebound games in a season with three: 25/18 at Marshall, 21/19 (school record rebounds in a league game) vs. Samford at home and 25/15 in SoCon Tourney win over Samford.
• The young squad majored in close contests. Eleven (4-7) went down to the final possession with 13 (4-9) within three points at any point in the final minute. There were 17 games (6-11) within two scores in the final two minutes.
• Signees for 2018-19 roster include 4-star prospect Kevin Easley, top 10 Illinois guard Maurice Commander, arguably the top point guard in the greater DC area Donovann Toatley and MVP of New England Preparatory School Athletic Council Championship Game Keigan Kerby.
Women's Basketball (Jim Foster, head coach) • 17-13, 8-6 SoCon/3rd • WNIT 1st Round
• Jim Foster became the eighth coach in NCAA women's basketball history – at all levels – to earn his 900th win.
• The Mocs posted wins over four teams from the Power 5 conferences. Beat both Indiana and Florida on their home courts and beat Northwestern and Auburn on a neutral court.
• UTC won the Challenge in Music City posting wins over Northwestern, Georgetown and Auburn
• Advanced to the postseason (NCAA/WNIT) for the 18th time in 19 years. (UTC turned down an invite to the 2011 WBI.)
• Keiana Gilbert earned All-Conference First Team honors; Aryanna Gilbert and Lakelyn Bouldin were named to the All-Conference Third Team
• Brooke Burns scored 36 points against UNCG in the SoCon Tournament and was named to the All-Tournament Second Team. 36 points is sixth most ever scored by a UTC player and most by a freshman in a single game.
• UTC beat Florida Gulf Coast. The Eagles finished the season ranked 25th in the USA Today Coaches Top 25.
• 12 of the Mocs' opponents advanced to the postseason. Four in the NCAA, six in the WNIT and two in the WBI. Indiana beat Virginia Tech for the WNIT title.
• Jim Foster retired at the end of the season and former Moc
Katie Burrows was hired as his replacement.
• The team was recognized by the NCAA for having a perfect APR score.
Cross Country (Andy Meyer, head coach)
Men (4th SoCon/20th NCAA Regional) • Women (4th SoCon/20th NCAA Regional)
• Women placed fourth in SoCon Championship meet for the second straight season.
• Men placed fourth in SoCon Championship meet for the second straight season.
• Both teams placed 20th in the NCAA South Region Championships.
• Emily Poole earned All-Conference Second Team honors.
• The men's team tied UTC's program record with a 3.85 team GPA in the spring of 2018. Their team GPA was also second in the nation for the 2017 season.
• The women's cross country team was recognized by the NCAA for having a perfect APR score.
Football (Tom Arth, head coach) • 3-8, 3-5 SoCon/T6th
• Tom Arth led the Mocs to a 3-8 overall record and a sixth place finish in the SoCon in his first season at UTC.
• Mocs scored a 23-21 win at No. 8 Samford on Oct. 28 and nearly pulled off a win at No. 8 Wofford the following week before losing in double-overtime.
• UTC won two of its final three games.
• True freshman Cole Copeland was forced into action due to injuries to the Mocs' top two QBs.
• Safety Lucas Webb tied the school record with 13 career INTs ... also set the SoCon record with his fourth career pick-6 ... named first team All-SoCon.
• The Mocs led the SoCon and finished No. 25 in the FCS in total defense, giving up just 326.4 yards per game.
• Tae Davis signed a free-agent contract with the New York Giants following the season.
Men's Golf (Mark Guhne, head coach) • 2nd SoCon
• Posted six wins over Power 5 Conference members (Iowa, Kansas State, Maryland, Michigan, Rutgers & Virginia).
• Junior Lake Johnson earned Golf Coaches Association of America Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar honors leading the Mocs to All-Academic Team on the 18Birdies Team Academic Awards list.
• Two All-Southern Conference Performers in Johnson and Luke Long.
• Junior Etienne Brault qualified for the 2018 U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach. He was one of just two among 78 at his qualifier in New York to advance.
• Former All-American Stephan Jaeger '12 earned his way onto the PGA TOUR with his play on the Web.com Tour in 2017.
Women's Golf (Colette Murray, head coach) • 2nd SoCon
• Nine victories over programs from Power 5 conferences [Iowa, Kansas, LSU (twice), Louisville, Maryland, Michigan, Ole Miss & Rutgers].
• Senior Megan Woods and junior Monica San Juan claimed Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar honors leading the squad to No. 18 among NCAA Division I schools and No. 29 across all levels with a 3.707 grade point average.
• String of five straight top 10 finishes by team members to start the spring 2018 slate. San Juan was runner-up in back-to-back events, one an individual event, before Woods became the first Moc since October 2015 to do so in team events. Cristina Perez followed with two more of her own.
• Four-stroke victory over No. 22 UNLV at Trinity Forest is the program's first top 25 win since Oct. 2015 finishing second in the Palmetto Intercollegiate (+18, 882) beating No. 23 Louisville by seven.
• Woods, UTC's nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year, became the program's first student-athlete to merit a Southern Conference Graduate Scholarship.
Soccer (Gavin McKinney, head coach) • 5-10-4, 3-4-2 SoCon/6th
• UTC advanced to the SoCon quarterfinal for the sixth time in school history.
• Chloe Arnold was named the SoCon Freshman of the Year – first in school history
• Chloe Arnold was named a Top Drawer Soccer Top 100 Freshman
• Jordan Mueller was named SoCon All-Conference Second Team
• Chloe Arnold scored the Mocs' first hat trick since 2015
• Jordan Mueller earned SoCon Player of the Week honors
• Chloe Arnold was named TN Sports Writer's Association (TSWA) Player of the Week
• 30 goals ties for fifth fewest allowed in school history
• 1.49 Goals Against Average ties for fourth fewest in school history.
Softball (Frank Reed, head coach) • 26-30, 9-7 SoCon/4th
• Chattanooga claimed the fourth seed in the SoCon Tournament and captured an opening round win over Samford, marking the fifth-straight year UTC picked up a first round win.
• Sophomore Aly Walker and senior Brook Womack were selected to the All-Southern Conference First Team while seniors Ashley Conner and J.J. Hamill landed second team honors.
• Senior Brook Womack was named the Southern Conference Player of the Month for March after batting .453 with five homeruns and 21 RBI in 23 games. She finished second in the SoCon with a .378 batting average for the season.
• Chattanooga claimed a three-game sweep over Western Carolina after taking the final two games against Samford to forge a five-game SoCon winning streak, the longest since 2015.
• The Mocs featured 12 different student-athletes with at least one homerun, the most in program history dating back to 1994.
• Freshman pitcher Allison Swinford earned Southern Conference All-Freshman laurels after picking up nine wins and three saves in the circle.
Men's Tennis (Chuck Merzbacher, head coach) • 8-18, 1-6 SoCon/7th
• The Mocs won eight matches under first-year head coach

• The eight wins are the most for UTC since 2012.
• Sophomore Niklas Gerdes won the Southern Conference Sportsmanship Award.
• UTC hosted the SoCon Tournament on April 20-22 at the Champions Club in Chattanooga.
• Mocs set a program mark with six individuals earning ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition, including Gerdes, senior Michael Birnbaum, sophomore Simon Bustamante and freshmen Cooper Long, Jacob Marshall and Luke Plaisted.
• Earned the ITA All-Academic Team honor for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
Women's Tennis (Chad Camper, head coach) • 10-8, 4-3 SoCon/4th
• The Mocs were 10-7 under second-year head coach

• The Mocs 2018 recruiting class was ranked No. 21 among mid-majors.
• The team was recognized by the NCAA for having a perfect APR score.
• Senior Samantha Caswell earned second team All-SoCon honors while freshman Emma Van Hee made the SoCon All-Freshman team.
• Juniors Delaney Edwards, Caroline Hall and Sydney Patton and freshman Emma Van Hee earned ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition.
• Earned team academic honors from the ITA for the eighth year in a row.
Indoor/Outdoor Track & Field (Andy Meyer, head coach) • 8th SoCon Indoor • 9th SoCon Outdoor
• Finished eighth at the Southern Conference Indoor Championships.
• Sophia Neglia earned All-Freshman Team honors in the 3000 meter.
• UTC added field events to its competitions this season.
• Three distance runners set PRs at the Alabama Crimson Classic in the 5K.
• Emily Poole placed fourth in the 10,000M at the SoCon Outdoor Championships.
Volleyball (Travis Filar, head coach) – 13-18, 6-10 SoCon/5th
• Chattanooga placed a pair on the postseason All-Southern Conference teams. R-Sophomore Ally Ford earned second team honors as an outside hitter while freshman Megan Kaufman was named to the All-Freshman team as the libero.
• The Mocs graduated three seniors in Lauren Greenspoon, Madison Bergren & Maddie Marshall.
• Lauren Greenspoon ended her four-year career with 3,316 total assists as the setter, ranking her fourth all-time in program history.
• Megan Kaufman posted the most digs in a season as a freshman in program history with 613 & finished fifth among all freshmen in NCAA DI. She posted a season-high of 42 in a five-set match against Western Carolina.
• Sarah Batterton saw success on the court and in the classroom. She was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, in addition to racking up 68 blocks and 320 kills in 2015.
• UTC won the Scenic City Showdown for the third-straight season.
• Earned the AVCA Team Award for Academic Excellence.
Wrestling (Heath Eslinger, head coach) • 8-7, 6-1 SoCon/2nd • T48th NCAAs
• UTC posted an 8-7 overall record and a 6-1 mark in SoCon action.
• The Mocs finished second in the SoCon regular season and tournament races.
• Head coach Heath Eslinger posted his 100th career dual win in his ninth season at UTC.
• Junior Alzono Allen (125) and seniors
Scottie Boykin (197) and Bryce Carr (184) all won SoCon Individual Championships and competed at the NCAAs.
• Bryce Carr was named the SoCon Wrestler of the Year and was one win away from All-American honors.
• Senior Michael Pongracz was an All-SoCon pick at 141 pounds.
• Earned the AVCA Team Award for Academic Excellence.
• Head coach Heath Eslinger resigned in July and was replaced by former Wisconsin All-American
Kyle Ruschell.
