We're trying something new. The Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball program is turning the page to the 2019-20 season, and if you click the roster link above, you'll see all 16 player names. The idea is to reveal the roster in a series of short feature stories on GoMocs.com introducing the squad throughout June and July.

Last in, last profiled. My guess is it won't take long to see the impact Trey Doomes brings. He's an athletic wing that spent a year in the Big 12 at West Virginia. It was a year well spent according to Doomes despite the decision to change.

"Just figuring out what's best for my future," he shared when asked about the process. "It was a great experience at West Virginia; the staff did a great job trying to develop me while I was there. Transferring to Chattanooga was a good fit for me."

WVU originally planned to redshirt him, but as the calendar turned to 2019, he took the court and played in 12 games. In 46 total minutes, six longer than one regulation contest, Doomes tallied 26 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and three steals. Pretty strong production in a small sample size.

The process of transferring is tricky. It's even harder when you enter a locker room already in the making. Doomes came on board in late June, a few weeks after workouts had begun for the Mocs.

"It takes three weeks to a month to get used to a new group of teammates, especially on the court," junior post Ramon Vila noted looking back on his own mid-season move in January 2018 from Arizona State. "They've already developed a little chemistry. He did a good job. I know the first week was hard for him. It just takes time to get that chemistry on the court. Off the court he's always with us, hanging out, such a good dude. On the court, I feel he adapted quickly. Now he's one of us."

Is there something about this program that eases that transition?

"Honestly, it's our players," Vila quickly countered. "We're regular students in the way we behave. This is a humble group. We're always happy, smiling and welcoming with new guys. That's something special with this team."

Doomes concurred, "The whole team was very welcoming from the time I took my visit through to today. It's a good group of guys working to soon be a strong group of brothers.

"It overwhelmed me at first. I've been around the game for a while now, so you know expectations coming in and really just try to find a way to fit in with the group of guys you're joining. You're learning everybody's game and trying to make a good impression on them."

Sophomore Malachi Smith made a similar move, albeit a little earlier. He was here on June 1 making the transition from Wright State right from the start.

"I think you'd feel like you were behind the eight ball," Smith acknowledged the difference in timing. "People have already made connections, learned the system for a few weeks, but it's the summer so we're all getting to know each other and it's not as hard to catch up. It could certainly be worse."

Smith shared a common theme when asked if there's anything about this current crop of Mocs that makes it easier, "There's a variety of people here. You've got a couple of people from different countries. There's transfers, 5th-year guys, freshmen...it's just wide range of guys so you can connect with multiple players on different levels."

It certainly seems Doomes has done just that. In practice preparing for the upcoming Bahamas trip, he's engaged and active. One can definitely detect the ease of moving into this locker room. Due to NCAA transfer rules, barring a waiver, his first official action will come in November 2020.
