TGA State Title Event Comes to Chattanooga

Three Chattanooga Mocs from incoming freshman to assistant coach tee it up at Lookout Mountain Golf Club for the 2020 TGA State Match Play.

CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team has a strong record of success in summer events over Mark Guhne's tenure at head coach. Wins at the state's signature pro event, the Tennessee Open, along with triumphs at the Tennessee Am are great sources of pride. Another of the Tennessee Golf Association's "majors" comes to the Chattanooga area at Lookout Mountain Golf Club.
The 20th Annual Tennessee Match Play Championships takes the tee July 7-10 at the historic venue. Returning star Oliver Simonsen and incoming freshman Braedon Wear are joined by assistant coach Ryan Heisey vying to bring the third match play trophy back to campus.
Simonsen won it in 2018 at Council Fire Golf Club. Steven Fox '13 captured the first win by a Moc in the 2011 event at Tennessee National Golf Club. The first four championships were played 1984-87. It was brought back in 2004 and has been played every year since. A win for Simonsen, Wear or Heisey would mark three over a 10-year period.
Derek Rende won the State Open in 2007 after his freshman year at UTC. Alums Bryce Ledford '07 (2009), Fox (2014) and Jonathan Hodge '09 (2017) claimed wins during Guhne's tenure. The list of Tennessee Am winners is longer with Thomas Smith (2006), Rende (2008), Fox (2013) and Wes Gosselin '17 (2016) all earning wins. That's 10 wins over 14 years.
This year's event has changed. The 64 players are placed in 16 pools of four. A round-robin format is played to get to a final 16 to compete for the title. The Mocs took a hit to their chances with Simonsen and Wear both placed in the same pod. Go here for more information on starting times, results, etc.
Simonsen is coming into the event in good form. He tied for third earlier this week at the Yamaha Players Championship. His 36-hole total of 135 tied for third, two shots off the lead. He ended the event at Oak Ridge C.C., with a 7-under 65. That tied for low amateur honors.
He's not alone as sporting events start back up around the country. Wear finished third in the Green Meadow Invitational before shooting 69 to qualify for the match play event. Connor Nolan qualified for the California Amateur tying for second at his location. His 4-under 67 at Goose Creek Golf Club.
Our Finnish duo of A.J. Lintunen and Dominic Jones played in national events recently. Jones finished strong at the National 4-Ball, while Lintunen advanced at the Finnish Match Play before his loss yesterday.
