CHATTANOOGA – The Chattanooga Mocs softball program and head coach
Frank Reed have announced Wednesday the hiring of former Tennessee Lady Vol and Mexico National Team standout
Cheyanne Tarango as an assistant coach on the staff.
Tarango will work primarily with the pitching staff after a highly successful pitching career across various playing levels in the sport. The Anaheim Hills, Calif., native previously coached at the University of Louisville from 2016-18 while continuing her professional playing career.
"We're excited and grateful to bring in someone as experienced and knowledgeable as Cheyanne to our program and coaching staff," said Reed, who will be entering his 20
th season as head coach at UTC in 2021.
"Her familiarity with the state of Tennessee and her successful professional playing career will make an immediate impact on our team.
"We can't wait to have her on campus," added Reed.
She last pitched professionally with the Cleveland Comets as part of the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league in 2019 and Team Mexico from 2015-19. In addition, Tarango logged professional stints in the Italian and New Zealand professional softball leagues from 2018-19.
Tarango helped lead the Lady Vols to three WCWS appearances during her career in Knoxville from 2011-15. Tennessee finished as national runner-ups to Oklahoma in 2013 where she finished the season 6-1 with a 1.44 ERA while batting .286 with 10 homers and 51 RBI. The team finished with a combined 197-55 (.782) record over the course of her career.
"I'm excited to be a part of the staff and start working with the girls. The state of Tennessee will always have a special place in my heart so I'm super happy to move back," said Tarango.
Following her collegiate career, Tarango anchored the pitching staff for the Mexico National Team from 2015-19. The team captured a silver medal at the 2018 Central American Games and ranks No. 5 in the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) World Rankings.
Tarango received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Tennessee in Education Health and Human Development Recreation with a concentration in Therapeutic Recreation in 2015 before earning her Master's Degree from the University of Louisville in Sports Administration in 2016.
