Men's Tennis Competes at ITA All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla. --- The Chattanooga Mocs men's tennis team saw a trio of victories on the opening day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships during prequalifying singles action in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Saturday.

"All the guys got great matches this weekend here in Tulsa. This tournament is the best of the best and I was excited to see how well we performed," said head coach Chuck Merzbacher.

"We had some very good wins along the way and some very close matches that we didn't get, but played well."

PREQUALIFYING RESULTS
Kerim Hyatt suffered a close opening pre-qualifying loss to Gabriel Diaz Freire of LSU, 6-4, 6-3 in the Round of 256. Diaz Freire is a graduate transfer who carries a 44-23 singles record in his career, making stops at Loyola Marymount, Clemson and most recently, Alabama.
 
Peyton Gatti battled in a close tie-breaking loss (6-3, 3-6 [10-7]) to Texas A&M's Rahul Dhokia in the Round of 256 to fall to the prequalifying consolation ladder. Simon Labbe dropped a 6-1, 6-2 contest to Arizona's Carlos Hassey. Tomas Rodriguez earned a BYE in the Round of 256 to advance to the Round of 128.
 
Rodriguez cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win over DePaul's Tripp Tuff in the Round of 128 to continue his journey in the prequalifying singles bracket. In the field of 64, Rodriguez suffered a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Omaha's Matt Hulme.
 
PREQUALIFYING CONSOLATION RESULTS
Hyatt and Labbe each earned victories in the prequalifying consolation Round of 128 to move on. Hyatt picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win over Victor Sklenka (Omaha) while Labbe took home a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Pol Botifoll Rius (Illinois State). Gatti fell 6-4, 6-3 to Adam Neff (SMU).
