Mocs Club Donor Spotlight: Dr. Jamie Harvey

Name: Dr. Jamie Harvey
Mocs Club Member Since: 2014
City of Residence: Red Bank, TN
Alma Mater: The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Eastern Kentucky University, NOVA Southeastern University
Occupation: Health & Human Performance Associate Professor at UTC

Why did you decide to join the Mocs Club and support Chattanooga student-athletes?
My late husband, a 1979 UTC alum, Mark Harvey and I became Mocs Club members to support UTC student-athletes because we wanted to invest in our university. We wanted to give support to the athletic department for our future alums. We also felt a strong community among other Mocs Club members.
Many freshmen student-athletes enroll in my summer course, Personal Health, when they arrive prior to the fall. It is a most high honor to be their "first university professor" where these new Mocs are introduced to a freshman-level course. I have a personal connection with many as they meet new classmates from various athletic teams.

What is your favorite memory as a Mocs fan?
The Mocs were playing an NCAA post-season game in Cleveland, Ohio. I was asked to represent faculty to travel. Mark & I boarded the UT plane and flew with our student government president, Fred and Ruth Obear and others for an unbelievable and unforgettable experience! The Obear's and I still talk about that fun time!

What are your interests outside of Chattanooga Athletics?
My interests include teaching in our Health & Human Performance department, playing with my grandson (who also is a Mocs member at our UTC Children's Center), reading, yoga, dancing, walking outside to the Walnut Street Bridge, Red Bank Community food pantry, and Red Bank United Methodist Church.

What would you tell others in the Chattanooga community to get them involved in the Mocs Club and supporting Chattanooga Athletics?
It is our hometown university where you will find friends who love our Mocs!

Favorite place to eat in Chattanooga and favorite dish?
Cracker Barrel with my dad, Skipper Fairbanks, who is a UC alum. My favorite dish is either oatmeal or pancakes and coffee with cream.

What makes you most proud to be a Mocs Club member?
The sincere camaraderie of many Mocs fans to join and support our student-athletes at many venues. "We put our money where our mouths are and wear our blue and gold".

Have you picked up any new hobbies in the past year?
Not really any hobbies, but have made more time to organize my house and office.

If you could have dinner with one person, who and why?
I would choose to share dinner with my late husband, Mark and ask him about the unfathomable and holy environment in heaven.

Favorite Moc of all time, player, coach, or administrator?
When I was earning my degree, I shared an undergraduate class with tennis professional Candy Reynolds and then as an HHP instructor, I taught Terrell Owens in an undergraduate course.
However, I must confess that I have 2 favorites who are current UTC coaches. Football Coach Rusty Wright was in at least one of my classes during his undergrad days! He lives with true passion for his alma mater and a love for his players to be their best-self.
My other favorite is Lady Mocs Coach Katie Galloway Burrows! She was an HHP major to become an educator which she did in her earlier career. To witness these superb individuals rise to their professional levels is an honor for me to note! They are each educators in their field of play.

If you could give a current student-athlete one piece of advice, what would it be?
Go. To. Class. Everyday. Period.

Final Thoughts?
As I was earning my undergraduate degree, I never imagined teaching on the university-level! I often explain that your life path offers so much. The choices each of us make matter and effect personal and professional directions.
•    Make the best of where you are presently.
•    Open yourself to unforseen possibilities.
•    Capture a passion and ask "How can I improve?"
•    Seek advice from others.
Go Mocs!
