CHATTANOOGA --- The Chattanooga Mocs beach volleyball program opens the 2021 season on Wednesday at the "Day of Duals" tri-match hosted by Georgia State in Atlanta, Ga.
UTC will face Coastal Carolina at 10 a.m. ET before squaring off with Mercer at Noon and the hosts Georgia State at 4 p.m. inside the GSU Beach Complex.
Chattanooga competed in just three matches last season in its inaugural season as an NCAA Division I program before the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown competition around the globe.
"We're grateful for the opportunity to put our training to the test against new opponents," said head coach
Darin Van Horn.
"We know opportunities to compete are not guaranteed and we plan to make the most of this one."
The Mocs feature a balanced roster with seven upperclassmen and six true freshmen, a combination of beach-only and indoor volleyball student-athletes. The team is led by its lone senior
Baylee Young (Jensen Beach, Fla.), who transferred to UTC in 2019 from Pensacola State.
In addition to Young,
Victoria Cerino (Brentwood, Tenn.),
Gylian Finch (Mount Morris, Ill.),
Brenna Everingham (Noblesville, Ind.) and
Maia Rackel (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) all saw action in last year's tri-match.
Newcomers to the 2021 roster include a pair of California college transfers in
Hanley Lomax (Roswell, Ga.) from MiraCosta College and
Bailey Steger (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) from Loyola Marymount.
Additionally, four beach-only freshmen in
Abby Ashway (Kennesaw, Ga.),
Jordan Krege (Greensboro, N.C.),
Madison Morris (Knoxville, Tenn.) and
Madelina Myers-Osband (Wilmington, N.C.) are highlighted on this year's roster.
Two indoor student-athletes will look to split time between both the beach and indoor programs this spring including
Paige Gallentine (Fenton, Mich.) and
Emma Perkins (Rossville, Tenn.).
