Beach Volleyball Earns OVC Doubleheader Sweep in Regular Season Finale

Chattanooga beach volleyball wraps up its inaugural full season as an NCAA Division I program with a 7-3 record in Ohio Valley Conference play.

RICHMOND, Ky. — The Chattanooga Mocs beach volleyball program bounced back from yesterday's action with a doubleheader Ohio Valley Conference sweep, picking up wins over EKU (3-2) and Austin Peay (3-2) on the final day of "OVC Weekend" hosted by EKU in Richmond, Ky.

Following the sweep, Chattanooga finishes its first full season 7-3 in OVC play and 8-9 overall. EKU dropped to 0-10 overall and 0-9 in the OVC while Austin Peay dropped to 5-8 overall and 4-5 in the league.

Chattanooga now awaits its seeding in the inaugural Ohio Valley Conference championship held next weekend at UT Martin in Martin, Tenn., April 29 – May 1. UTC currently sits as the No. 2 seed.

Chattanooga 3, EKU 2

1 – Krege/Young (UTC) def. Mitchell/Woody (EKU) 21-11, 21-16*

2 – Finch/Steger (UTC) def. Michalak/Alexander (EKU) 21-13, 21-12

3 – Schoen/Johnson (EKU) def. Gallentine/Finch (UTC) 21-13, 11-21, 15-11

4 – Lomax/Ashway (UTC) def. Schmitendorf/Logan (EKU) 17-21, 21-19, 15-9

5 – Roeder/Campbell (EKU) def. Myers-Osband/Jordan (UTC) 25-23, 21-16

EX – Davis/Franklin (EKU) tied Mullins/Perkins (UTC) 15-21, 21-17

 

Order of finish: EX, 5, 4, 2, 1*, 3

 

The No. 1 duo of Jordan Krege and Baylee Young got back to their winning ways and clinched the match victory over EKU behind a smooth 2-0 (21-11, 21-16) victory. Young and Krege saw their 10-match win streak snapped in yesterday's sweep.

 

Finch and Steger also returned to the victory column as the No. 2 pairing for Chattanooga after cruising to a 2-0 (21-13, 21-12) sweep. Finch and Steger carried a five-match win streak as the second pairing into yesterday's action.

 

Paige Gallentine and Victoria Cerino battled in a tight 2-1 (21-13, 11-21, 15-11) loss in the No. 3 slot for the Mocs. Hanley Lomax and Abby Ashway picked up a 2-1 (17-21, 21-19, 15-9) comeback victory to tie the match at 1-1 as the No. 4 pair.

 

Makenzie Jordan and Madelina Myers-Osband fell as the No. 5 pair for UTC in a 2-0 (25-23, 21-16) decision. The duo of Jada Mullins and Emma Perkins battled to a tie in the exhibition match, 1-1 (15-21, 21-17).

3 – Gallentine/Cerino (UTC) def. Mead/Seyring (APSU) 21-15, 21-17

4 – Lomax/Ashway (UTC) def. Eisenhart/Waite (APSU) 21-14, 19-21, 16-14

5 – Arrington/Darland (APSU) def. Myers-Osband/Jordan (UTC) 23-25, 21-18, 16-14

EX – Ratledge/Keenan (APSU) def. Mullins/Perkins (UTC) 21-15, 21-11

 

Order of finish: 5, 4, 3, 1*, 2

It was once again the dynamic duo of Baylee Young and Jordan Krege who clinched the match for the Mocs in the No. 1 pairing, picking up a clean 2-0 (22-20, 21-18) win over the Govs top pair. Young and Krege finished the OVC season 8-2 as Chattanooga's top combo.

 

Gylian Finch and Bailey Steger dropped a tight 2-1 (17-21, 21-12, 15-8) decision in the No. 2 slot while the No. 3 pairing of Paige Gallentine and Victoria Cerino picked up a 2-0 (21-15, 21-17) win to earn a split for the day.

 

Chattanooga's No. 4 and No. 5 pairing split their matchups against Austin Peay. Hanley Lomax and Abby Ashway earned a thrilling 2-1 (21-14, 19-21, 16-14) win at No. 4 while Madelina Myers-Osband and Makenzie Jordan dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 (23-25, 21-18, 16-14) decision at No. 5.
