MARTIN, Tenn. — The No. 2 seeded Chattanooga Mocs beach volleyball team battled rain drops on the opening day of the inaugural Ohio Valley Conference Championship and eventually fell 3-0 to tournament host No. 3 UT Martin on Thursday afternoon in Martin, Tenn.
The day's contests were altered from the originally scheduled matches and were each concluded "by decision." The first team to win three separate pairs were award the victory on the spot rather than playing out all five pairs due to inclement weather.
"It was a slow start. This pool is too competitive to get behind early," said head coach
Darin Van Horn, after the team fell behind 0-2 after the No. 4 and No. 5 pairings kicked things off.
The No. 5 grouping of
Madelina Myers-Osband and
Makenzie Jordan dropped a 2-0 (21-15, 21-9) decision before the No. 4 grouping of
Hanley Lomax and
Abby Ashway fought to a tight 2-1 (21-12, 16-21, 15-12) loss.
It was the No. 3 pair where the match was clinched for the Skyhawks after the duo of Vic Cerino and
Paige Gallentine fell 2-9 (21-18, 21-17). The No. 1 and No. 2 pairings went unfinished due to the schedule adjustments.
"We have another shot to get it right tomorrow. We will be ready for the long haul," concluded Van Horn.
No. 2 Chattanooga will face No. 5 Jacksonville State at 11:00 a.m. ET tomorrow in an elimination match. The Mocs swept the Gamecocks in a doubleheader thriller last week.
