The wide receiver room is unproven, outside the Chattanooga Mocs locker room. Inside it, there's a known quantity to a group that gets so little limelight outside it. One Moc who has to take that room on every day at Scrappy Moore Field offers his thoughts.

"Man, I don't even know where to start with those guys," senior defensive back Jordan Jones began. "It's a blessing to get to compete with them day in and day out. Reggie (Henderson) is a top wide receiver, one of the best in the SoCon if not the best in the SoCon. Going against him every day? It gives me all the work I need right here.

"If you ask me, that room as a whole, there's not one better in the SoCon and FCS as a whole."

The combined 115 receptions for 1,765 yards and four touchdowns over 79 games flashes that potential. There's more to be done for this group, but the blend of young guys with experienced emerging talents like preseason All-SoCon wideout Reginald Henderson set a confident tone.

"We're looking for growth every day in practice," Henderson added. "We've got a lot of young guys. This group has a lot of potential. We saw a lot of young receivers make plays in the Mercer game last year and that confidence carried over for them to now seeing them do it in practice.

"We have a lot of potential and are looking forward to proving who we are as an offense unit, not just in the receivers room."

That was echoed by his position coach Adam Mims, who was a SoCon standout at Furman.

"Us learning how to be consistent will get us to performance," Mims explained. "Across the board, the play-making ability is there. We just have to prove it every week. We've grown as a group through camp. Our play speed and confidence is getting there."

WR ROOM MANTRA
"Shows us why we recruited you. Every one of them are here for a reason. All of them are really good reasons. Now they just need to let their play speak for them."

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
"We're expecting a big year from our wide receiver group. Especially with our running game being what it is, we have to win one-on-one matchups which we've done through camp and into fall practice. I'm excited for people to see what a special group we have." – QB Cole Copeland

"That group has to continue growing and fighting to get better. There's a lot more depth in that room than we had in '19. In the long run, if they do the things they're supposed to, they're going ot have a good year." –Coach Rusty Wright

NOTES
  • Henderson averaged 19 yards per catch with a team-high 15 receptions for 285 yards. His career line of 36-666 is tops on the squad.
  • Jamoi Mayes (6-97, TD) and Tyler Walker (5-91) combined for 11 catches for 188 yards in last year's first starts against Mercer.
  • The WR room helped returning start at QB Drayton Arnold rank third in the nation in yards per completion last season (15.7).
