Rodriguez Victorious in Singles, Pair of Duos Advance at ITA Regional

The Chattanooga Mocs men’s tennis team will continue action tomorrow at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- Junior Tomas Rodriguez posted a clean 6-1, 7-5 victory over Purdue's Rohan Sachdev to advance to the main singles Round of 64 during the opening day of action at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional hosted by the University of Tennessee on Thursday afternoon.

In addition, the doubles duos of Rodriguez and Peyton Gatti and Kerim Hyatt and Simon Labbe each posted victories in the opening Round of 64 to move on the main doubles Round of 32 tomorrow.

"Our second sets, pretty much across the board in singles were solid as guys got back into their matches," said head coach Chuck Merzbacher. "Regionals are always a super tough event but overall I see some improvements. Doubles play was strong with two main draw wins.

"We have a lot more tennis tomorrow."

The doubles team of Rodriguez/Gatti were seeded ninth and secured a solid 8-4 decision over Vanderbilt's Connor Robb-Wilcox and Jeremie Casabon before Hyatt/Labbe dominated with an 8-1 victory over Xavier's Brett Winters and Cambell Nakayama. Both duos find themselves searching for a bid to the Round of 16 tomorrow afternoon.

Rodriguez, seeded 16th in singles, advances to face unseeded Oscar Cutting of Memphis tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. ET. Rodriguez/Gatti, seeded ninth in doubles, will square off against Northern Kentucky's Santiago Casamayor and Emilien Burnel while Hyatt/Labbe jump forward to face ETSU's Hugo Lobo and Frazier Rengifo, both at 3:00 p.m. ET.
