Soccer Falls 2-1 to Austin Peay Friday

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Chattanooga's Samantha Shaw netted her fourth goal of the season but it wouldn't be enough for the Mocs soccer team who fell 2-1 Friday night to Austin Peay at the UTC Sports Complex.

The Lady Govs scored their first goal of the season in the 17th minute and followed that with another three minutes later.

The first goal came on a set piece by the Govs. Tori Case sent a corner kick into the box and after a scramble, Rachel Bradberry made a touch on the ball and crossed the goal line for the go-ahead goal.

It wouldn't take long before Claire Larose launched her shot into the upper right corner for what would prove to be the game winner. She eluded a pair of Moc defenders and sent a right-footed shot into the net from inside the 18-yard box on the right side.

"Maybe we didn't get what we deserved tonight," head coach Gavin McKinney said. "I thought for the majority of the match we were the better side. We got punished twice in the first half. Once from corner and once from loss of possession. You've got to credit them for being opportunistic and taking those two chances. Maybe we didn't get what we deserve, but that's the sport we play."

The Mocs fought back and scored a goal late to cut the lead in half, but the equalizer wouldn't come for Chattanooga who moves to 2-3 overall.

Shelby Hash stole the ball from Austin Peay on the Govs' side of the half and pushed forward, finding the feet of Shaw about 25 yards out. She pressed toward the box, shifted the ball from her left to right foot and fired it past the keeper into the bottom right corner to make it a one-goal match in the 85th minute.

"We worked the ball into some really good areas," McKinney said. "We preached to them about quality chances. We created more than enough in the second half to get back to 2-1 maybe earlier than we did and give us a bit more time to find the equalizer, but the girls didn't stop. They took the info at halftime well; they fought to the end."

The win was the first for the Govs who improve to 1-4 overall. Chattanooga hits the road for a Sunday matchup with SEC foe Auburn at 2:00 p.m. Eastern time. The game will be carried by the SEC Network and live scoring will be available. Check out GoMocs.com for links to the coverage.
