Maia Rackel nabs first career SoCon weekly accolade

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After leading all four of UTC's matches in kills, indoor volleyball junior attacker, Maia Rackel was named the Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week. The conference office announced the weekly awards Monday afternoon.

Rackel posted 77 kills throughout the four matches, averaging 4.53 kills per set and a .317 hitting percentage. The Signal Mountain, Tenn. native also recorded 12 blocks, 1.71 per set.

She eclipsed 500 career kills in the Mocs' match on Tuesday at Jacksonville State with 15. In her 25-kill effort vs. Western Illinois, the Signal Mountain native tied her career best set two years ago. Additionally, she hit .400 in that match which was a career high when recording more than 10 kills. She was named to the Hampton Inn Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Recording 15, 18, 19 and 25 kills, respectively, Rackel set a season high in every match last week.

This was the first weekly accolade in Rackel's career. Furman's Andrea Aceveda was awarded defensive honors and Gabriela McHugh of UNCG picked up the setter of the week accolade.

The Mocs head back to Chattanooga next weekend and will host Tennessee Tech, Virginia Tech and Troy in the annual Chattanooga Classic. The Mocs begin the action vs. TTU at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10.
