Postgame Quotes - VMI

Chattanooga Football Postgame Quotes
No. 9 Chattanooga Mocs vs. VMI
Finley Stadium – Chattanooga, Tenn.
Saturday - Oct. 15, 2022

Rusty Wright, Head Coach
Overall statement after 41-13 win over VMI.
"We're a little beat up, but our kids did what we talked about all week. We talked about, offensively, taking care of the football, not turning the football over and giving us opportunities to go score. We talked about, defensively, having the urgency to go get lined up. And the one thing we talked about on special teams was executing and doing your job. We did it for the most part all day, except for one kickoff. And those are things we have to continue to get better at and continue grow. But, I'm really happy for those guys in that locker room and those coaches."

On following the open week. "I thought I think we got some things accomplished over the open week to get to this point and do what we did. And you know we just we sit here, we got another opportunity to go play next Saturday after today."
On what to improve. "We nitpick the little things a bunch because right now, we're a better football team. So I have to. That's the thing we have to understand. We were good today, offensively, because we didn't turn the ball over. Now, we have to be better on third downs."
Devonnsha Maxwell, Sr.-DL
Overall thoughts.
"In terms of to get this win, I mean, it wasn't always pretty. There were moments of being like, I kind of put stuff together in every facet of the game, but to kind of really control this game is the next step."

On game plan.
"We preach taking care of the ball and playing defense one play at a time. So those drives where they look like they were against something, as long as we kept playing, we were able to get stops. So it felt good. We hadn't beat them in a couple of years, so that also felt good as well."

On putting a full game together.
"Yeah, we're right on the cusp of the putting the whole game together. We just have to come out a little stronger. That's on me as a leader to rally the guys and make sure we come out stronger. So eventually we'll put a whole 60 minutes together."

Preston Hutchinson, Gr.-QB
On taking it one week at a time.
"Our goal has been to take it one week at a time, and that's exactly what we did today. Break that down, to take it one play at a time. And I thought we did just that today. So I was really pleased with the guys. I know we struggled with VMI in the past, the past couple of years, so it was awesome to get this one under our belt."

On getting the tight ends involved.
"It's nice having those big bodies that can possession catch, and they got a little speed to them as well. It's extremely beneficial. A tight end is a quarterback's best friend, and when you have multiple of them, it's super beneficial."
