Volleyball Sweeps Second-Place Samford 3-0 to Snap Win Streak

The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team snapped Samford’s seven-match win streak following a straight-set victory on Friday.

CHATTANOOGA – The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team continued its strong play at home this season and rolled its way to a convincing 3-0 (28-26, 25-21, 25-20) victory over second-place Samford in Southern Conference action inside Maclellan Gymnasium on Friday evening.

After the win, Chattanooga has now won six of its last seven matches and improves to 13-13 overall and 7-4 in league play. Samford saw a seven-match win streak snapped in the defeat as the Bulldogs drop to 13-10 overall and 8-3 in the SoCon.

The win marked the second time this season where UTC snapped an opponents seven-match win streak (at ETSU). It's also just the second time since 2015 where the Mocs have defeated Samford and ETSU in the same season.

Chattanooga fell behind early in the opening set, 7-2, before rallying to tie the set at 23-23 before taking its first lead at 26-25. UTC would take a 1-0 lead after kills from Natalie Tyson and Halle Olson notched a 28-26 set win.

It was an offensive attack from UTC in the second set as the home team attacked at a high .333% percentage, recorded 19 kills while committing just three errors on 48 swings. The Mocs earned a 25-21 win and claimed a 2-0 lead in the match.

After the two teams were tied at 7-7 in the third, Chattanooga rattled off eight of the next 11 points to extend out to a 15-11 lead and forcing Samford into a timeout. The Bulldogs pulled within two at 16-14 but failed to tighten the gap any closer as the Mocs cruised their way to a 25-20 win and a 3-0 sweep in the match.

Tyson (16) and Olson (14) combined for 30 of the team's 51 kills while hitting a combined .314% in the process. They each completed kill-dig, double-doubles after notching 18 (team-high) and 13 digs, respectively, in the victory.

Chloe Bryan totaled nine kills on 19 swings at a .368% clip while Sydney Hall followed with six kills and a team-high four block assists to aid the scoring attack. The team's .307% attacking percentage was second-best this season, trailing its .309% mark earlier this season against Samford.

Sophia Bossong led the team with 24 assists and added eight digs while Elaine Redman added 14 assists and a pair of digs to help direct the offense. Paige Gallentine reached double-digits again in digs after finishing with 12 in the three sets.
