CHATTANOOGA --- Although shortened due to rain, another successful Steve Baras Fall Invite is in the books for the Chattanooga Mocs men's tennis team as the squad saw junior Peyton Gatti and freshman Cortland Grove earn titles in their respective singles flights following play Friday and Saturday.
 
"The tradition of the UTC Steve Baras Invite, and the great collegiate play that it attracts once again proved to be one of the best Fall tournaments in our region," said head coach Chuck Merzbacher.
 
"So many positive results for our team with winning two out of the six singles flights, and one runner-up. Also, the doubles play continued to get stronger, with a runner-up finish at the topflight of doubles.
 
In each flight, singles and doubles, we performed at a high level. I thought the guys showed toughness. Playing a three-day tourney in two days, they did well," added Merzbacher.
 
In addition to the two victors, Simon Labbe finished runner-up in both singles and doubles after partnering with teammate Gatti in the top "Power C" flight of the event. Freshman Kristof Kincses earned a third-place finish in singles and doubles with teammate Kerim Hyatt.
 
"I'm so proud of Peyton [Gatti], earning his first collegiate singles title. He has worked so hard on his game, and it has shown all Fall. Along with his singles, Peyton and Simon [Labbe] played some great doubles getting to the finals. Simon had a fantastic last UTC Steve Baras of his career, with runner-up finishes in Singles and Doubles. He played hard and well all weekend!"
 
Head coach Merzbacher added great words and thoughts on the newly-established freshmen inside the Chattanooga program.
 
"I was very excited for Cortland [Grove], as a freshmen, to win three straight singles matches to claim his singles flight. He keeps getting better, as the season rolls on. Our other freshmen, Kristof Kincses finished with a 3rd place in his singles flight and a 3rd place in doubles with Kerim [Hyatt] to wrap up his final tourney of the fall season."
