Â
CHATTANOOGA---It's that time of year. Every week is a pivotal Southern Conference game, and the 11th-ranked Chattanooga Mocs trip to The Citadel this weekend is no different.
Â
The day started with some good news. Senior linebacker Ty Boeck earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Defensive Player of the Week honors. Boeck recorded a season-high 14 tackles and had a fourth quarter interception at Furman last week.
Â
Â
This week Boeck and his defensive mates focus on a stout Bulldogs rushing attack that exceeds 200 yards per game. Not only do they churn out yardage, but that attack also focuses on keeping a defense on the field leading the nation in time of possession at nearly 37 minutes (36:53) per game.
Â
That shortens the game and limits possessions for an offense looking to return to lighting up the scoreboard. The group is averaging 29.5 points per contest, 33.7 against FCS opposition. The defense limits opponents to 17.4 ppg (15.4 FCS) and is among the leader nationally against the run (98.4 ypg).
Â
Coach Rusty Wright spoke first…
Â
He was followed by DE Ben Brewton and OT Lucas Lavin. Both side of the line of scrimmage are always on notice on The Citadel week…
Â
Game time is 2 p.m., in Johnson Hagood Stadium. It's slated to broadcast on ESPN+.
Â
3 NOTES TO KNOW
- The Mocs are the least penalized team in the SoCon and third in the FCS in number (31) and fourth in per game (3.88).
- The defense has proven to be difficult to drive against. Opponents have managed just 1.1 points per drive starting at the 50 or farther scoring on just 21.2 percent of the possessions.
- The defense has held up well in short field situations in just eight of them this season, they've allowed one touchdown and just 19 points.
