CHATTANOOGA---The 11th-ranked Chattanooga Mocs return to Finley Stadium this weekend for the final regular season home game of 2022. It's a doozie too with No. 9 Samford in town. The Bulldogs lead the Southern Conference at 6-0 with a trio right on their paws at 5-1 including Chattanooga, Furman and Mercer.
Â
Once the asterisk is next to the name on the schedule, it really doesn't matter who you're facing…it's a big game. That's what the conference slate is all about.
Â
"Everyone keeps telling me about big matchups," Coach Rusty Wright said. "We've heard that for the last month. We just we go out there, prepare and try to play as well as we can on Saturday. That's what this group has done.
Â
"We'll work and prepare this week like the others and see if it's good enough on Saturday."
Â
The Mocs got a good bit of news Monday afternoon. The last look back on a successful trip to Charleston as eyes move squarely on the task ahead. Reuben Lowery III is this week's Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week.Â
Â
Â
The sophomore defensive back has excelled in the slot for the Mocs defense this year. It's a position that's a hybrid touching on some aspects of cornerback, safety and even a little linebacker just to spice things up.
Â
Due to a flu outbreak, he moved to safety this past weekend after arriving in Charleston. All last week, defenders talking with the media mentioned how important reads and assignments are against the Bulldogs.
Â
He took to the new task well tying Ty Boeck for game-high honors with nine tackles adding a fumble recovery in the first quarter that set up the Mocs first score. He ended any chance of a Bulldogs comeback with his first career sack in the hosts final play of the fourth period.
Â
"Reuben is a guy who can handle moving around," Wright added. "He is a student of the game and does exactly what he's supposed to do. He prepares himself the right way. He's one you turn the film on and don't really worry about on Saturday because he's gonna give you everything he's got.
Â
"He works his tail off to be good, but he does that in everything on and off the field."
Â
Coach Wright joins "Voice of the Mocs" Jim Reynolds on Chat with the Mocs
Tuesday Night (instead of tonight) at Walk-On's Sports Bistreaux on Broad Street in Chattanooga's Aquarium District. The change was made with the Mocs basketball teams starting their seasons tonight with the women at home and men on the road at 7 p.m. CWTM airs from 7-8 p.m., on 96.1 FM/1070 AM in the Scenic City area or
