AP RELEASE

CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs put a school record four student-athletes on the 2022 AP All-America Team released on Tuesday. Jay Person led the way as a first team defensive lineman, while the trio of defensive back Kameron Brown, offensive lineman McClendon Curtis and defensive tackle Devonnsha Maxwell earned second team merit.

The four total on individual teams breaks the record of three set last year. Maxwell and safety Brandon Dowdell took second team honors offensive lineman Cole Strange on the third in 2021. There were six honorable mention in 1979 and 1983. That was in the seasons prior to FBS/FCS division.

Person finished in a tie for eighth in the Buck Buchanan Award voting for the top defensive player in the nation. He was Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year with a dominating performance on the edge. Person led the league in tackles for loss (17.5) and tied Maxwell for the sacks lead with 8.0. It's his first All-America honor.

It's also the first for Brown. He burst on the scene in 2022 after three seasons in a mostly reserve role. The junior from Mobile, Ala., tied for the league lead in interceptions with six including a pick 6 early in the win over Mercer. His six picks tied for third nationally.

It's the second All-America mention for Maxwell and Curtis in 2022. The duo were first team selections per HERO Sports. It's Maxwell's eight career All-America honor with AFCA second team in 2020-21, five of the six possible teams in 2021.

Phil Steele's FCS All-Conference teams came out recently as well. The Mocs were well represented on both sides of the ball with 16 of 22 starters mentioned. Here's the breakdown between the four teams and major honors.
