Game 28 – vs. UNCG – Feb. 17 – McKenzie Arena
Postgame QuotesÂ
Head Coach Lamont Paris:
Opening statement
"We tried to put ourselves in position for a dramatic comeback, and we did. We just didn't finish it off. It was a classic case of too little too late. We turned it on late. We didn't get great shots, but good enough. We weren't making some and they were making some. Part of it was defensive breakdowns. They made some plays, including that last shot. I don't think it was highly contested, but also don't think it was a low degree of difficulty. That one stung. Hopefully that will affect us in a positive way moving forward."
Down 12 and made it a ballgame
"We started pressing and that was good for us. We sped them up and they made some bad decisions. They turned the ball over and fouled us, too. It got us going a little faster too, and we made some shots. UNCG had a couple of guys step up and make threes that don't normally make threes. They beat us. We did some stuff to beat ourselves, but they made shots. At the end of the day, that was the difference in the game."
On preparing for tonight's game.
"These guys play. They play as hard as they can and that's it. We already know and believed what this might look like. People are looking in now what this might look like. I addressed it to them obligatorily, just in the sense that we would not think about anything other than winning this game and preparing the same way. I think we prepared the same way we normally do. We didn't finish and we didn't get to the free throw line nearly as much."
On knowing what's at stake.
"This [today's game vs. UNCG] is history. We have a one-day tournament to prepare for the hardest team in the conference to prepare for [VMI]. They shoot at all positions. It is a very difficult team to prepare for. You have to go 180 degrees in another direction. There is no option other than, this is history. We have to go to the next one. The more people that talk about what this game can be… they know that. We will try again on Saturday against another good team and get to the drawing board tomorrow."
David Jean Baptiste – Gr., G
On UNCG's effort.
"UNCG played great defensively. They have a lot to play for and so do we. There was a three-way tie for fourth and they played like it. The Langley brothers did a great job with full-court pressure… shout out to them."
On what was at stake tonight.
"We still have three games left. We fought and they played hard at the end. We just know we have to put this to the side and move on to VMI Saturday."
Malachi Smith – So., G.
Overall thoughts on the game.
"We didn't come ready to play. That falls on me. It shows our resilience to fight back. We can't put ourselves in that situation. We have to realize we are every team's Super Bowl. Players that don't normally make shots made shots. You have to do a better job controlling that on the defensive end."
