WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD HEADS TO SOCON CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS WEEKEND
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga women will head to Lexington, Va., this weekend for the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by VMI at the Corps Physical Training Facility.
"We are excited to be racing this weekend," Mocs head coach Andy Meyer said. "We have had a very good winter build up. Many if not all the kids have never been faster.
"Coach Gadson has the sprinters and jumpers well prepared. Coach Griffin has mid-distance runners ready to compete and of course are distance ladies are always set to race hard. We are hoping everyone is ready to take another step forward and compete at an even higher level as our conference has become so fast."
Kimbra Dunning will concentrate on the long jump this year, looking to improve on her longest leap of the season at the Samford Invite in January. She ranks eighth in the SoCon standings at 5.33 meters.
Imani Bryant will run the 60- and 200-meter dash events for Chattanooga. She set personal bests in both events this season. The 400 meter dash will feature Carley Burt and Rebekah Pass.
Sydney Cansler, Emmy Davis and Brooke Rieves will compete in the 800 meter run. Davis ranks 11th in the SoCon in the event after posting a season-best time of 2:22.33 at the Bulldog Invite in February.
Justine Glass and Lesley Green, both ranked in the Top Nine in the SoCon will run the 3000 meter event. Glass posted a personal best 9:58.20 at the Samford Bulldog Invite with Green ranked ninth at 10:02.06 at the same race.
Glass and Green will also run the 5000 meter on Day One along with Camden Morris, Allie Potter and Emma Russum. Green is ranked sixth in the SoCon with a time of 17:36.44 at the Samford Invite in January while Potter has a 13th ranking with a time of 19:31.72 in January.
Faith Brown will run the Mile event for the Mocs. She will also slated to compete in the 4x400 meter relay and the Distance Medley Relay. Chattanooga holds a No. 8 ranking in the league standings in the 4x400 with a time of 4:26.41 set in February.
Others slated to compete in the Mocs 4x400 meter relay team are Davis, Glass, Bryant, Rieves, Dunning and Ashtyn Hagood. Davis, Haggod, Russum and Rieves, along with Brown are possible for the DMR.
Several of the ladies are ranked in the top 12 of their respective events, Meyer said. "We are hopeful we also get a couple surprises from a couple others who have competed well this spring in Ashtyn [Haggod], Faith {Brown], and Imani [Bryant}. Our Distance Medley Relay team should also place well.
"The girls across the board have had a great indoor season so far, hopefully it will continue this weekend. I'm excited for the ladies and a little nervous for them as this team has a great competitive attitude and they all want to do their very best!"
The meet will begin Saturday at 1:30 p.m. with the women's shot put and conclude Sunday at 4:00 p.m. with the women's 4x400 meter relay. Live stats will be available on the track and field schedule page at GoMocs.com.
ESPN+ coverage will begin at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, showcasing the final events. Samford won both the men's and women's titles in 2021. This will be the fifth season the championships are hosted by VMI.
