CHATTANOOGA --- Both the Chattanooga Mocs men's and women's tennis programs will make their season debuts this weekend as the men's squad will compete in the Samford Invitational in Birmingham, Ala., while the women travel to Clarksville, Tenn., for the Austin Peay Fall Invite Friday through Sunday.
 
The men's program enters the 2022-23 campaign with loads of confidence and optimism following a semifinal appearance in last year's Southern Conference Championships. The team welcomes four newcomers this year in addition to returning six letter winners.
 
"We are super excited to ger the fall season started with the Samford Invitational," head coach Chuck Merzbacher stated.
 
"The guys have been working hard, pushing each other, and competing well in practice. We have a deep team this year and I'm looking forward to it."
 
Chattanooga will face the likes of SoCon foes Samford and Mercer this weekend in Birmingham in addition to the local squad of UAB. The fall events in collegiate tennis do not count against a team's overall record.
 
On the women's side, the team returns six letter winners to the roster and welcomes a trio of newcomers consisting of one scholastic freshman and two transfers. Similar to the men's program, the 2022-23 women's squad is filled with excitement and eagerness to follow up last year's semifinal appearance.
 
"The team has really maximized their practices in this fall season," said head coach Chad Camper. "The energy is great, and the team is closely competitive. It will be interesting to see how things unfold this weekend.
 
"We are up against some solid programs, so it will be the little things that will be important. Doubles teams are always fun to see what works and who gels with whom. We always enjoy the fall season."
 
Chattanooga is one of six schools competing this weekend at the Austin Peay Fall Invite. The Mocs join the hosts, Georgia Southern, UT Martin, Murray State and UAB.
