Indoor Volleyball Defeats Presbyterian, 3-1, in Jacksonville Invite

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The Chattanooga Mocs indoor volleyball team secured its first victory of the coach Julie Torbett era and 2022 season after defeating Presbyterian 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19) in the second match of the Jacksonville Invitational hosted by Jacksonville University on Friday afternoon.
 
The win followed a narrow 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 24-26, 23-25, 15-11) loss to the tournament hosts, Jacksonville, in the early match of the day. Chattanooga improved to 1-4 overall this season following the victory while PC also moved to 1-4. JU upped its record to 1-3 after the morning win over UTC.
 
"We are a really close team right now and they trust the process completely," said coach Torbett following her first victory at the helm at UTC.
 
"I appreciate all the players and the staff committing to a new system. It will pay off in the long run."
 
UTC will round out play in the Jacksonville Invite tomorrow morning with a matchup against Georgia State at 11 a.m. ET. Live stats are available for the match and can be found on the schedule page.
 
PRESBYTERIAN 3, CHATTANOOGA 1 | BOX SCORE
SET ONE | UTC 25, PC 22
After PC grabbed a 4-3 lead out of the gate, Chattanooga scored four-straight points to take a 7-4 edge. The teams were tied 10-10 before the Mocs dominated at the net to go on a 5-1 run, pulling ahead 15-11 in the back half of the set.
 
PC fought back and tied the set up 18-18 before taking a very late 22-21 lead off of a service ace. UTC responded with the set's final four points as an Elaine Redman kill clinched a 25-22 set victory and a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
SET TWO | PC 25, UTC 23
The two teams traded the set's first 10 points before PC created separation at 11-8 following a stretch of six kills. Trailing 13-11, UTC allowed five-straight and six-of-seven points from the Blue Hose to fall behind 19-12 late in the set.
 
Chattanooga came roaring back in the set after creating walls at the net in addition to sporting an offensive attack from Nailah Jones, cutting the deficit to three at 23-20. PC picked up a kill and forced an attack error to notch a 25-22 set win and tie the match 1-1.
 
SET THREE | UTC 25, PC 23
UTC registered kills from four different players in the early going of the third set to build a 9-4 edge. The lead grew to eight, 16-8, following a Chloe Bryan kill and a pair of blocks from Bryan, Jones, and Sydney Hall.
 
Trailing 23-17, PC scored six of the next seven points to cut the deficit to just one point at 24-23. UTC took care of its fifth set point opportunity when Natalie Tyson laid down a kill off a Sophia Bossong assist to notch the 25-23 set victory and a put the team ahead 2-1.
 
SET FOUR | UTC 25, PC 19
Similar to the third set, Chattanooga raced out to a sizable lead with this time amassing a 10-3 advantage behind the effort of five Tyson kills in that 13-point span. A Bryan kill made it 16-10 in favor of the Mocs before the Blue Hose rallied to cut the deficit to one, 20-19.
 
Following a timeout, the Mocs scored the match's final five points with kills from Bossong and Kate Neill, a solo block from Bryan, and a pair of aces from the service line from Paige Gallentine. UTC earned the 25-19 tally in the fourth and a 3-1 victory in the match.
 
JACKSONVILLE 3, CHATTANOOGA 1 | BOX SCORE
SET ONE | JU 25, UTC 23
Chattanooga jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the opening set before Jacksonville responded with seven of the next eight points to take a 10-6 lead. The Dolphins lead grew to six down the stretch, 19-13.
 
From that point, UTC went on an offensive attack and sprinted its way to a 10-4 scoring run to tie the set up late 23-23. Jacksonville recorded the set-clinching points off a Mocs service error and a kill to take the 25-23 decision and a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
SET TWO | JU 25, UTC 23
This time it was Jacksonville who raced out to an early lead after scoring six of the set's first seven points to take a 6-1 edge. Chattanooga battled its way back in the set again and posted a 15-9 scoring run to take the lead in the set 16-15 off a Halle Olson kill.
 
The two teams traded points down the stretch which saw four ties and four lead changes after both teams were locked 18-18. Sophia Bossong recorded a kill to put UTC ahead 21-19 before she posted an ace from the service line to make it 23-22 in favor of the Mocs. However, two attacking errors from the Chattanooga side and a service reception error allowed JU to claim a 25-23 victory in the set and 2-0 lead in the match.
 
SET THREE | UTC 26, JU 24
It was a back-and-forth affair to begin the must-win third set for Chattanooga as the two teams found themselves tied at 10-10 following the first 20 points. UTC would build a two-point lead on multiple occasions over the next few rallies before the Dolphins erased the deficit to tie it back up at 17-17.
 
Down 24-22 and facing match point, Chattanooga fought off two-straight JU opportunities to close the match out and tied it at 24-24. Natalie Tyson called set and finished the third with consecutive kills to cap off a 4-0 run to give UTC a 26-24 victory and extend the match to the fourth set.
 
SET FOUR | UTC 25, JU 23
Chattanooga fell behind 8-2 early in the fourth set following a lethal Jacksonville attack that saw seven of the eight points recorded via kills. JU continued to lead the set behind the strong offensive effort and carried a 15-10 lead into the back half of the set.
 
The Mocs reeled off nine of the next 13 points to take its first lead of the fourth, 19-18. The two squads were tied at 23-23 before Kate Neill forced a deciding fifth set behind back-to-back kills, giving UTC a 25-23 victory and tying the match 2-2.
 
SET FIVE | JU 15, UTC 11
In the first fifth set of the year, UTC fell behind early by a 7-2 tally before charging back to cut the deficit to just two, 8-6. The Mocs couldn't hold off the Dolphins explosive offensive attack and dropped the deciding set 15-11 and the match 3-2.
