Postgame Quotes

Rusty Wright, Head Coach
On the season-opening shutout importance.
"That's a big deal. You saw how the kids played out there in the fourth quarter, it was important to them. It doesn't happen a lot. We weren't really sure what we were going to see from them offensively, but I thought our guys played really well up front. It was hard sledding tonight. Anytime you can do that in today's college football, we have some good players on that defense."

On the young receiving core and offensive attack.
"Those guys have some talent, we think they can play. It was a bunch of their first games in years. Hopefully they continue to grow and get better. You score 24 points on offense, you get a pick-six, that's a pretty good night I don't care where you're at. We have a long way to go but I think these guys are going to continue to grow."

On the play from QB Preston Hutchinson.
"He made good decisions and you saw what he can do with his legs a little bit, he threw the ball pretty well. It's going to take two to get through this thing, it just does, I don't care what level you play at. I think for the most part he was in great shape for most of the night and really managing the offense. We didn't know what they were going to do defensively, it was completely different from last year."

Jay Person, EDGE, Jr.
On pitching a shutout.
"It was big. I think I only have one shutout in my whole life and that was North Alabama last year. It was a big deal getting a shutout, especially against a conference team. It made us work a lot harder [playing a conference game first]. We worked hard this offseason and took the task in hand."

On starting with a win.
"It's a really good feeling. This is what we wanted. We wanted to start out with a victory since it's been a while. It feels really good to start this way."

Preston Hutchinson, QB, Sr.
On facing an unknown defensive style.
"We just decided we were going to play our game and we knew there is only a limited number of defenses a team can run. Whatever we saw, we were just going to work on the fly and play our ball."

On first start in a while.
"It felt so good being back out there. There was just so much time pent up for these three-and-a-half hours, and it just felt so good to let it fly and play loose."

On the QB competition with Cole Copeland.
"This is my sixth year and I've competed against so many quarterbacks and it's just iron sharpens iron. Cole [Copeland] made me a better quarterback even after year six. I believe I made him better too and he's just one snap away. He's a really good quarterback too. It was good to compete, it made us better for sure."
