CHATTANOOGA --- The Chattanooga Mocs men's tennis team is set to open its 2023 spring home schedule this weekend when it hosts Gardner-Webb and Young Harris for a pair of duals on Saturday at the Strang-Voges Tennis Center at nearby McCallie School.
The Mocs first matchup of the day against Gardner-Webb will start at 1 p.m. ET while the second leg of the Saturday doubleheader will aim to start at 6 p.m. ET. UTC (0-1) is looking to bounce back from a season-opening road loss at SEC-member Alabama last Sunday.
Chattanooga and Gardner-Webb will meet for just the fifth time since 1973 and for the first time since a 6-1 GWU win in Boiling Springs, N.C., back in 2013. UTC is 3-1 all-time against the Bulldogs.
"This looks to be a close match at every position," said head coach
Chuck Merzbacher about GWU. "We are looking forward to playing this at home and in front of our fans. It should be a good one."
UTC and Young Harris will meet for the second time since 2020 and for just the third time between the two program's history. The two teams first met back in 1954 (5-2, UTC) before taking a 66-year hiatus. The Mocs earned a 7-0 win in the last match up in 2020.
"The second match of a doubleheader is where we need everyone to step up. We have played them before and they have some really strong spots," added Merzbacher on Young Harris.
Full match results will be made available following the conclusion of action on GoMocs.com.
