Samuel Espinosa helped lead the Chattanooga Mocs to a two wins to open the 2023-24 campaign.

CHATTANOOGA---The landslide of all landslide victories came Thursday afternoon as the Southern Conference announced Chattanooga Mocs senior Samuel Espinosa as September Golf of the Month. Espinosa's run was impressive to say the least.

It began with an epic win at Erin Hills shooting 3 under on the U.S. Open venue sharing medalist honors at the Marquette Intercollegiate. Not only did he spearhead the Mocs comeback for the team title, but the squad passed the likes of Purdue, Cal and Augusta while pulling away from Texas A&M for the win.

They made 2-for-2 the next time out claiming the Bearcat Invitational crown in Cincinnati. That included blowing past host Cincinnati and Louisville for the win led by two top 5s – Paul Conroy (3rd) & Espinosa (4th).

Espinosa's efforts led the Mocs into the top 25 in two indexes. The Golf Channel power rankings have the team at No. 19, while the Golfweek/Sagarin Ratings has the team at No. 22.

The senior from Spain went 162-3-1 for the month, a .979 winning percentage. That included wins over two top 50 golfers in the WORLD AMATEUR Rankings – Sampson Zheng (Cal) and Herman Sekne (Purdue).

The Mocs are back on the tee Oct. 22-23 defending their Furman Intercollegiate title. The Paladins host the event at Furman Golf Club. Conroy tied for third there last year with 7-under 206 leading the Mocs to back-to-back wins at the time.

Notes
- The win at Marquette was the first of his UTC career, but fourth overall collegiately. Sam won three times at King College in Bristol, Tenn.
- 1st UTC student-athlete win to open the season since the 2004 Buffalo Rock/Southern Showdown: Bryce Ledford shot 208 (72-69-67) for the first of two wins on the year.
- Averaged 70.17 for the month shooting 8 under par. Five of his six cards were under par with three in the 60s.
