This Week in Women's Basketball History - November 19-25

HOF Katasha Brown. The Mocs hosted #1 Tennessee at The Roundhouse. 10,051 fans were in attendance - the 10th largest crowd to watch a UTC men's or women's basketball game and largest crowd in women's basketball history at The McKenzie Arena.
2023-24 is the 50th season of women's basketball at UTC. We will travel back in time to explore the Mocs history one week at a time.

The Mocs, also known as the Mocettes and Lady Mocs in previous seasons, are 43-37 for all games played November 19-25 and sport and 22-10 record at home. Chattanooga went 6-1 in Maclellan Gym and 16-9 in The McKenzie Arena.

The largest crowd to watch a women's basketball game in the Roundhouse was 10,051 in the season-opener on November 19, 2004 against the top-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols. It ranks as the 10th largest crowd in Chattanooga basketball history and most for the women's team.

On November 20, 2017, the Mocs went into Hoosier territory and held off Indiana for a 64-61 win. Senior Keina Gilbert matched her career-high with 27 points, scoring 20 in the second half. Chattanooga led 45-42 with 10 minutes to play. Indiana drew to within a pair, 63-61, with 8.5 seconds to play on a 3-pointer. UTC would get one more point and hold on for the victory. Sophomore Lakelyn Bouldin added 13 and junior point guard Molly Melton scored a career-high 10 points.

The Mocs posted a 16-12 record in Thanksgiving tournaments and went 3-1 in those played in Chattanooga. UTC beat Cornell (69-50) and Dartmouth (58-50) to claim the SoCon/Ivy League Challenge played in Maclellan Gym in 1997.

At the turn of the century, the Mocs claimed the PacBell Classic title with wins over Gonzaga (72-60) and host San Diego State (74-59) in 2000 in California.

While UTC has hosted a few postseason WNIT games, Chattanooga came away with a 53-48 overtime win against Southern Mississippi in the consolation bracket of the 2015 Preseason WNIT.

In 1979, Nebraska came to the Scenic City only to see the Lady Mocs grab a 79-64 victory. In 2003, UTC edged Louisville (68-65) in the Roundhouse.

The Mocs faced off against the SEC 13 times and got wins against Alabama in Maclellan in 1981 and Auburn in 2013. Tennessee took all five wins against the Mocs during this week in Mocs history. The Lady Vols, led by legendary coach Pat Summitt, were ranked in the Top 5 in each contest against the Mocs including a No. 1 ranking in 2004.

In 2017, the Mocs traveled to Nashville for the Challenge in Music City. UTC beat Northwestern 61-44 on Day One and grabbed a 54-41 victory over Georgetown the next day. The final game of the three-day tournament was against Auburn, but that result is for next week!

TITLE IX ENABLES EQUALITY FOR WOMEN IN SPORTS
In 1972 Congress enacted the Title IX of the Education Amendments stating: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

50 SEASONS OF CHATTANOOGA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The 2023 season for the Chattanooga women's basketball team marks a major landmark for the program and the university, as UTC women's basketball officially celebrates its 50th season of competition as a university sponsored athletic program. Following the adoption of the Title IX legislation back in 1972, UTC added women's basketball, tennis and volleyball programs to its roster of athletic teams, bringing on five decades of history and success for each of the teams. Chattanooga WBB will be putting on multiple promotions and content pieces throughout the 2023-24 season to celebrate the program's history, culminating in the team hosting its 50th Season Celebration and Reunion during the Mocs' February 3 matchup against Furman at McKenzie Arena.
