FCS PLAYOFFS: Round Two Has Double Meaning

Redshirt freshman quarterback Luke Schomburg and the Chattanooga Mocs are off to Greenville, S.C., for a second matchup with the Furman Paladins.

CHATTANOOGA---The 18th-ranked Chattanooga Mocs are headed into round two this Saturday in Greenville, S.C. Round two of the FCS Playoffs as well as round two with the seventh-ranked Furman Paladins.
 
The Mocs and Paladins had a fierce regular season matchup ending in a 17-14 home loss for the good guys. Chattanooga is coming off an exciting 24-21 win at Austin Peay in the first round, while Furman had a bye as the tourney's seven seed.
 
The road has been kind to the Scenic City crew with five straight wins in FCS competition. That's the most consecutive road wins against like competition since 2014 when that squad advanced to the Quarterfinals which is where they go with a win Saturday at Paladin Stadium.
 
Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. It airs on ESPN+ as well as over the radio airwaves via the Mocs Sports Network on flagship station WFLI (96.1 FM/100.3 FM/1070 AM).

  • 13th 8-win season in school history. Looking for 9 wins for the 8th time: 1931, 1968, 1977, 1979, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016.
  • 10th time playing a December game: 1904, 1905, 1926, 1928, 1931, 2014 (2), 2015 & 2016. Just four of the prior games (2014, 2015, 2016) were in postseason play.
  • 4th playoffs second round game in school history. 1-2 all-time with the Fordham win in 2014 followed by narrow road losses at Jacksonville State (2015) and at Sam Houston State (2016). The Gamecocks reached the final, while the Bearkats lost in the quarterfinals to eventual national champion James Madison.
  • The last time two SoCon schools met in the FCS Playoffs? 2017, a 28-10 Wofford win over Furman in Spartanburg, S.C. The Mocs are 0-0 against fellow SoCon schools in the postseason, the Paladins are 2-4.
