Sharon Fanning in UTC Arena

This Week in Women's Basketball History - December 3-9

Sharon Fanning led the Mocs to a win over Tennesse Tech in the first women's game played at the UTC Arena (now McKenzie) in 1983.
2023-24 is the 50th season of women's basketball at UTC. We will travel back in time to explore the Mocs history one week at a time.

The Mocs, also known as the Mocettes and Lady Mocs in previous seasons, are 37-32 for all games played December 3-9 and sport and 24-8 record at home. Chattanooga went 9-4 in Maclellan Gym and 15-4 in The McKenzie Arena.

Forty years ago this week, the Lady Mocs played their first-ever game in The McKenzie Arena. Sharon Fanning led her 1983-84 team to a 74-66 win over Tennessee Tech on December 3, 1983. All five starters landed in double figures led by Tina Chairs with 17 points. Chris McClure recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Mocs shot 62.1 percent in the second half, outscoring the Golden Eagles by six. Kim Horsey, Kay Irby and Kim Weems each added 12 points and Elinor Benson dropped in nine off the bench in 13 minutes.

The Mocs had big wins against Louisville and Vanderbilt just days apart in 1979. UTC also claimed victories against San Diego in 1992, Auburn in 2005, Alabama in 2012 and Mississippi a thrilling overtime win at home in 2003.

Nicole Mattison hit a 12-footer at the buzzer to give the Mocs a 79-77 overtime victory against Ole Miss. Katasha Brown and Tiffani Roberson each scored 22 points, a career-high for Brown who also had a double-double with 11 rebounds. Roberson also pulled in a double-dip with 12 boards. Katie Galloway had 15 points with a trio of triples and six assists.

Back in the days of 18 or 20-game Southern Conference seasons, the Mocs league play started before the Christmas holiday break. The Mocs went 7-0 against the SoCon, beating Furman twice.

With teams coming and going in the league, the Mocs met up with Samford and Mercer before the pair joined the league in 2008. UTC beat Mercer in all three meetings and face Samford once, grabbing an 84-44 win over the Bulldogs.

Tennessee hosted the Mocs twice this week in history as a ranked opponent. UTC fell both times, once in 1980 and again in 1984. In a closer battle, the Lady Mocs fell 73-66 to Mississippi in Maclellan in 1983.

TITLE IX ENABLES EQUALITY FOR WOMEN IN SPORTS
In 1972 Congress enacted the Title IX of the Education Amendments stating: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

50 SEASONS OF CHATTANOOGA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The 2023 season for the Chattanooga women's basketball team marks a major landmark for the program and the university, as UTC women's basketball officially celebrates its 50th season of competition as a university sponsored athletic program. Following the adoption of the Title IX legislation back in 1972, UTC added women's basketball, tennis and volleyball programs to its roster of athletic teams, bringing on five decades of history and success for each of the teams. Chattanooga WBB will be putting on multiple promotions and content pieces throughout the 2023-24 season to celebrate the program's history, culminating in the team hosting its 50th Season Celebration and Reunion during the Mocs' February 3 matchup against Furman at McKenzie Arena.
