EATONTON, Ga.---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team s right in the middle of a stacked field at the Linger Longer Invitational. The Mocs' 296 is one behind Clemson in seventh and three ahead of South Florida, Kennesaw State and Wofford in ninth.
 
It was fueled by an amazing back nine by Garrett Engle and strong finish from Paul Conroy.
 
"The course played really tough today," Coach Blaine Woodruff shared. "The greens were firm, and it played really long with the cold and gusty winds. I'm really proud of how the guys played on our second nine. We played it better than almost everyone in the field. That was encouraging after hitting some adversity closing out our front side (15-17)."
 
Engle was 5 over through his first eight holes with a triple bogey on 16 and double on 17. He birdied seven of his last 10 holes shooting 30 on his back nine (1-9) to come in with 2-under 70.
 
"We're really proud of G and what he did after the turn," Woodruff added. "He had nine putts on that nine. It was absolutely insane. It was also good to see Paul finish with two birdies in his last four holes to count. Those add up and can make or break an event.
 
"We're looking forward to a great pairing and opportunity tomorrow."
 
Conroy was on the struggle at 8 over through 14. He birdied six and nine to finish with 78. That was the final counting score along with John Houk at 73 and Braedon Wear's 75. Samuel Espinosa had the drop score of 79.
 
No. 20 Alabama and Georgia are tied for the lead with 283. No. 1 Vanderbilt is in third at 286. There's a 3-way tie for first individually at 4-under 68. Engle is tied for eight.
