OPELIKA, Ala.---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team turned in a level-par performance behind a great start by Paul Conroy at the Tiger Invitational presented by Jason Dufner. Conroy's 5-under 67 is tied for first while the team's 288 is tied for eighth, right in the middle of the 17-team pack.
 
Conroy had a near-perfect day with six birdies, 11 pars and a solitary bogey. It was a sensational start with birdies at holes 2, 3 and 4 before making the turn at 5 under. A bogey at 11 was quickly atoned for on 12 with a birdie four on the par 5.
 
John Houk joined Conroy under par with 71. Garrett Engle was even with 72, while the duo of Braedon Wear and Samuel Espinosa matched at 78. The Mocs are tied with Wichita State at 288 which is one better than the 10th-place duo of Florida Atlantic and Toledo. Its just two strokes out of seventh with South Alabama's 286.
 
"It was a tough day for us out there," Coach Blaine Woodruff summed up. "I'm proud of Paul for the round he put up to keep us in it. We have two more days to make a move which our guys are more than capable of doing.
 
"We're excited for the opportunity to get out tomorrow and post a number."
 
Southern Miss is the early leader at 273. The Golden Eagles are three clear of No. 7 Auburn. Conroy is tied for the lead with USM's Robbie Later and the Tigers Brendan Valdes.
 
The Mocs are back on the tee in the morning. They start on No. 1 with Espinosa leading off at 9 a.m., Eastern time playing with Stetson and South Alabama. Scoring and pairings are linked above when available.
