Conroy Joined by Alums at Southern Am

Rising senior Paul Conroy is joined at the Honors Course this week by alums Andrew Weathers and Brendon Wilson at the 117th Southern Amateur.

CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs are well represented at the 117th Southern Amateur. The 4-day, 72-hole event started today (July 19) and ends Saturday (July 22) played at the Honors Course in the Chattanooga suburb of Ooltewah, Tenn.
Rising senior Paul Conroy is the headliner but he's not the only Mocs in field, just the only current student-athlete. Graduates Brendon Wilson '99 and Andrew Weathers '18 join him as they continue their amateur careers.
"It's great to have three Mocs in the field," Coach Blaine Woodruff shared. "The Southern Am is one of the most prestigious amateur events, and this year's field is outstanding. It's even more special because it's in our backyard at the Honors, one of the many courses around this great golf city that our guys get to play. I think all the participants will see how golf crazy this community is, and what makes Chattanooga such a special place!"
The event started today although weather is wreaking havoc with the field as just nine groups got underway before a long delay began at 8:10 a.m. Conroy was one of the few groups to get on the course sitting tied for third at 1 under through two holes. Wilson (8:58 a.m.) and Weathers (2:57 p.m.) are biding their time waiting for the festivities to begin again.
The Southern Am began in 1902. This is the 117th playing of the event with its fourth stop at the Honors. Chattanoogan A.W. Gaines won the second edition in 19 holes over H.L. Edwards of Dallas in 19 holes at Swananno Golf Club (Asheville). Fellow Chattanoogan Ed Brantly won it 54 years later at La Gorce Country Club 3&2 over Macon's Arnold Blum.
Mike Malarkey of Signal Mountain captured the crown settled by match play in 1963 at Coosa Country Club in Rome, Ga. He claimed a 4&3 triumph over David Boyd of Atlanta.
Braedon Wear is the last Moc to play in the Southern Am making the cut last year finishing with 291 at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga. No UTC golfer or alum has won the event.
