DENVER---Chattanooga Mocs junior Garrett Engle tees off Monday in the 123rd United States Amateur. This year's field tackles Cherry Hills Golf Club August 14-20 with one stroke play card at Colorado Golf Club.

Yes, Cherry Hills. It's the first trip back to the famed club since 2012 when a certain someone claimed the Havemeyer Trophy. The was then rising senior Steven Fox just 11 years ago.

Engle's caddy for the week has his own memories as a competitor in that 2012 Mocs win, but that's nothing compared to the present.

"It's going to be a special week at Cherry Hills," Coach Blaine Woodruff shared. "There are not many schools that can claim a Havemeyer Trophy winner. To have Garrett qualify at the same site that Steven won in '12 is a pretty cool storyline.

"I'm excited to go up there and be on the bag for him."

Engle has 311 of the world's top amateurs to topple to hoist the vaunted trophy. Winning it typically includes a whirlwind tour of events, namely on the big tours with likely invites to the Masters, U.S. Open and British Open as well as a host of sponsor exemptions as well as amateur events on the world stage.

His journey begins at 3:25 p.m., Eastern time, on Monday at Colorado Golf Club's first hole. The final stroke play effort shifts to open on No. 10 at Cherry Hills Tuesday at 9:55 a.m., Eastern time. The top 64 from stroke play move on to the Match Play side of the equation Wednesday through Sunday's 36-hole title tilt. Scoring and tournament links are at the top of the story.

Q&A with Garrett Engle
With you first appearance in the U.S. Am, how exciting is it to earn your way into one of the toughest fields to reach in golf?
"It's very exciting. It'll be a very cool experience to be out there playing in the Am, so I'm definitely gonna take some time to enjoy it, but I'm even more excited for the opportunity to do something special if I get things rolling."

What do you know about Cherry Hills?
"I'll be entirely honest, I don't know much at all, I know that there's an island green par 5 as well as some of the US Open history but apart from that, I don't know too much."

Do you know UTC's history with the club?
"Yeah, I do know about some of our history there, I know the Mocs have some good memories out there, so hopefully I can do the same. I also know Blaine has a little history there playing in that Am as well."

Coach is on the bag & as you noted, played in the 2012 Am there. Does that bring an added bonus to preparations?
"It should be a lot of fun. I'm very thankful that he's taking the time to come out and help me out this week. It's nice to have that support from him. I don't think he'd come out there if he didn't believe I could make a run, so it's comforting to know I have that support and have his experience out there with me."
