Frode Flos van der Schans Brings Home Bronze Medal from FIBA U20 Women’s European Championship

Van der Schans; the Netherlands capture the team’s fourth medal in the history of the tournament with a 68-51 victory over Switzerland in Sunday’s third place game.

CRAIOVA, ROMANIA --- Chattanooga women's basketball was well represented over the past nine days in Romania, as UTC redshirt-freshman Frode Flos van der Schans captured bronze with the Dutch National Team at the FIBA U20 Women's European Championship.

Van der Schans saw action in each of the Netherlands' six games in Craiova, helping to lead the Dutch to a 4-2 record in the tournament. The Amsterdam native finished her tournament averaging 2.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game for the Dutch squad while logging an average of 8.3 minutes per game.

"I'm very proud that I got to represent my country," van der Schans said. "We worked really hard to get our medal and I'm thankful for Chattanooga for helping to give me a chance to do that."

The UTC redshirt-freshman opened her tournament against Kosovo, where she posted her best stat line of the week with team-highs in rebounds (9) and assists (5) alongside three points and a steal. It also was one of three games where van der Schans chalked up 10+ minutes of playing time, also hitting the mark in the team's quarterfinals matchup against Norway and in Sunday's third place game against Switzerland.

"We are extremely proud of Flo and her team's bronze medal performance," UTC head coach Shawn Poppie said. "It was a great experience for Flo, and I truly enjoyed seeing all of the joy she had during the championships."

"Her sisters back in Chattanooga followed her every step of the way. Now we can't wait to get her back with our program as we prepare for our season."

After finishing the group stage with a 2-1 record, van der Schans and the Netherlands punched their ticket into the quarterfinals where they squared off against Norway. After an 86-59 win for the Dutch, they advanced to battle with Germany in the tournament semifinals. Following an 81-73 win for Germany, the Dutch would ultimately capture bronze with a 68-51 win against Switzerland.

The Dutch have now won their fourth medal in the 24-year history of the FIBA U20 Women's European Championships. The most recent medal for the team came in 2018, when the Netherlands took home bronze against Italy while playing in Division A of the tournament.
