CHATTANOOGA---One more sleep. Unless of course you get a Saturday nap in. But can that really be called a sleep? I guess it depends on how much you value naps, but we digress.
 
The Chattanooga Mocs open the 2023 football season on the road for the first time since 2014 tomorrow. The troop train travels to Florence, Ala., for a date with the North Alabama Lions Saturday night. Here are a few items to help prepare for the Mocs first quiz.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Offensively:

• RB Ailym Ford as six consecutive 100-yard efforts coming into the contest dating back to Oct. 1 last season at ETSU. He ran for 776 yards over that span with eight TDs.
• QB Chase Artopoeus is slated to make his first career start after coming to Chattanooga as a grad transfer from UCLA. He threw for 2,610 yards with an incredible 26 touchdowns and only one interception his senior year of high school while adding another 300 yards on the ground with five more scores.
• WR Jamoi Mayes needs just 15 receiving yards to reach 1,000 for his career.

 
Defensively:

• The 35 sacks in 2022 tied 2014 for the second-highest total in school history behind 38 in 2016. The room returns the league's co-leader in edge Jay Person's 8.0 as well as DE Ben Brewton who tied for third a half-sack behind with 7.5. Fun fact extra…Person shared the sack lead with former teammate DT Devonnsha Maxwell who tied the school sack record in the last visit to UNA with 3.5 before smashing a few weeks later in a home win over ETSU (5.0).
• Since 2009, eight Mocs have celebrated seasons with the league's DPOTY Award: 2009: Josh Beard; 2012: Davis Tull; 2013: Davis Tull; 2014: Davis Tull; 2016: Keionta Davis; 2018: Isaiah Mack; 2021: Maxwell & 2022: Person.
• A year ago, just one starter returned. This year it's four led by All-America corner Kam Brown. He tied for second in the nation last year with six interceptions. It was the most in a single season in the program since Lucas Webb had six in 2014. Only five Mocs recorded more: 8 – Phillip Aldridge (1985), Reggie Solomon (1987); 7 – Bucky Wolford (1966), Mike Cope (1970), Alphonso McDaniel (1979).

 
One more note to note: 14 on the current roster hail from the state of Alabama: OL JD Broussard (Athens), DB Kam Brown (Mobile), OL Almarion Crim (Adamsville), RB Reggie Davis (Montgomery), Edge Jestin Gilmore (Tuscaloosa), LS Jake Hall (Saraland), WR Jaden Jude (Athens), DL Kelvin Morris (Hartselle), DB Cardavion Myers (Piedmont), WR Matt Rozier (Huntsville), QB Luke Schomburg (Huntsville), LB Bo Spearman (Irondale), DL E.J. Thomas (Pritchard), DB Jordan Walker (Lafayette). NFL Hall of Famer Terrell Owens '95 is from Alexander City. Current Atlanta Falcons linebacker Tae Davis '17 is from Oxford.
