CHATTANOOGA---The 2023 football season is here. The Chattanooga Mocs are ready to open while opponent North Alabama already as a game under its belt. This is the Lions second Southern Conference foray after a 17-7 loss this past Saturday to Mercer in Montgomery, Ala.
Â
The Mocs have spent the past month in detailed preparation for year 5 of the
Rusty Wright Era. He enters the season in rare company. He is one of four head coaches in program history to open their careers with four or more .500 seasons. The previous three? Leslie Stauffer (1910-13), CFB Hall of Famer Frank Thomas (1925-28) & Bill Oliver (1980-83).
Â
The list that made it five in a row? Only Wright can write that tale from the start of a career. Joe Morrison (1975-79) and Russ Huesman (2012-16) did it five times in a row at some point, just not in their first five campaigns.
Â
"Each year is different," Wright shared. "Each one is unique. I really like this team. They work hard. They hit hard. They play the right way.
Â
"We're all excited to see a different uniform across the line of scrimmage I can promise you."
Â
The squad was previewed position-by-position with all linked below. There are three National Player of the Year candidates and four seniors on watch lists for exciting NFL draft preparation opportunities. Those are all stories for another day, however.
