RECAP: Mocs Claim Top 10 Finish in Southern Scuffle

Isaiah Powe

Isaiah Powe led the Chattanooga Mocs to their third top 10 finish at the Southern Scuffle presented by Compound Sportswear.

CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs finished eighth at the Southern Scuffle presented by Compound Sportswear. It's the third top 10 in the event for the home team and first since a seventh-place ending in 2012.

Chattanooga posted 63.5 points with four medalists. That's the most since four in 2012. Freshman Isaiah Powe led the way with a third-place finish at 141, while Blake Boarman (133) and Noah Castillo (149) added fourths. Austin Paradice claimed 157's seventh spot with a pin.

"Ultimately, we gotta get better at wrestling as a whole, but we had very good highlights," Coach Kyle Ruschell began. "Blake Boarman...I think he's getting over the hump, you know? Beating a top 15 guy in the country in this tournament and then battling on the back side against a top 10 guy. He sees himself capable of winning those big matches.

"With Noah Castillo, it's fixing a few situations there. He's that close to winning this tournament instead of taking fourth losing to two guys that are ranked nationally. So, he can see himself there in March as well.

"Of course, our freshman Isaiah Powe, right? Just a huge highlight for him. It shows our whole team that anybody can do it. It's just a matter of believing in your skills and your attacks. Isaiah did that and earned the results of it."

Stanford was the team winner with 153.5 points. Oklahoma (136) was runner-up just ahead of Indiana (134) in third. Gardner-Webb's Jha'Quan Anderson (184) was named Most Outstanding Wrestler with Gavin Sax (174) from North Dakota State claiming Gorrarian Award honors for the most pins in the shortest timeframe.

NOTES
  • 4 medalists are the most since 2012. Tied for second highest total in school history in the event behind seven in 2006 in Greensboro, N.C.
  • 3 semifinalists – Boarman, Powe & Castillo – are a new program record best two in 2006.
  • 3 Top 4 finishes makes it 12 total for the Mocs in the Scuffle. First time with more than one in a tournament with the previous nine coming in 2005 (4, John Davis, 184), 2012 (2, Nick Soto, 133), 2014 (4, Soto, 2014), 2015 (3, Sean Boyle, 125), 2016 (4, Jared Johnson, 285), 2017 (3, Bryce Carr, 184), 2018 (3, Carr, 184), 2020 (4, Matthew Waddell, 2020), 2022 (3, Brayden Palmer, 133) and 2023 (2, Palmer, 133).
  • Powe is just the second freshman medalist (Soto, 2012) in the Scuffle by a Moc.
  • Boarman's podium finish is the eighth by a 133 for the Mocs. That's the most of any weight class ahead of six by 125.
  • Castillo's 4th-place finish at 149 is the best by a Moc at that class topping Tanner Smith's fifth in 2020.
  • Paradice is the first Mocs 157 to place in the Southern Scuffle. It was the lone class without a medalist in the event for the program.
